Hey,
I don't post to often and mostly lurk but I thought I'd bring this up and give anyone car shopping a heads up.
Recently one of the older guys I hang around with found a guy on kijiji selling a Red 1966 Nova (fully restored) for under $10,000. Seemed a bit to good to be true. Upon emailing the guy selling and asking if he had a phone number to call, he received a pretty generic email from the seller saying he had moved it to eBay, but wanted it gone and would sell it cheaper (huge warning sign I know).
After replying to the email he received essentially the same email with the product number "328314607391" and a link to "photos" that the seller had "forgotten" to attach. When visiting the eBay site from the email he was able to view the Nova, seemed legit, but when searching from another window or different computer he could not find it, even with the item number.
Now this fake eBay site looks real, the url matches and everything and they had a spot to contact a eBay rep. While in live chat with this "rep" they told us the seller had a good selling reputation but they where handling the sale. This throw up huge red flags that where already creeping up.
Now when visiting the "photo" site that looks like a legit Kodak site he was prompted to download and install a .exe.. which of course he installed :|. Now when searching on eBay he was able to find the Nova and more recently he has been prompted for credit and debit card information. Also when he views the site by clicking a link from Google he can now find the car. So obviously he's got a nice bit of male-ware redirecting him. Worst part is he entered his name and password into the fake eBay site.
I've since called eBay regarding this (they informed me that ebay item numbers only have 12 characters, while the fake had 14) and I'll be forwarding the emails on his behalf. On top of this I'll be removing Trojans and god knows what else from his laptop. :|
I thought I'd give you guys a heads up in case you find another add selling this car, and if you contact the seller and he gives you the same links saying he forgot to attach photos do not open it and contact kijiji. The user went by the name 66Nova and his email was similar (I can give more details once I get the laptop spyware free).
anyway, have a good holiday and stay safe.
