Made a dipstick tonight. I used a Lokar dipstick and tube for a LS engine, removed the cable part from the handle it was to short and they have been known to shred and end up in the engine. I then got a stick from a 4.3l I had around measured it .183 and drilled the lokar handle to that size the trimmed the stock one to fit and locked it down with the set screw works great

Cool, I have seen this mod online for the Olds V8, how much mod is needed for base to fit the block? The aftermarket chrome tubes fit like *ss for the Olds V8. I bought the expensive Supercar's tube but it actually fits the block.

You just have to grind one side flat aittle and it slides right in and the bracket on the header bolt holds it in place real nice

I kind of wish Olds would have put the dipstick on the passenger side. I always end up breaking dipsticks installing headers and the steering shaft doesn't help.

Brief thread-jack here, my apologies in advance...

I kind of wish Olds would have put the dipstick on the passenger side. I always end up breaking dipsticks installing headers and the steering shaft doesn't help.

Christian, I had problems for a few years with floppy and breaking dipstick tubes on my 455 too. A broken tube on the morning of a race weekend at the track was the final straw.
I found the easiest fix once I got a replacement tube (still available at the dealership at that time), was to make a small bracket that bolted to the closest header bolt. I then installed the new tube and tack welded it to the bracket.
After it was tacked, I removed the tube and bracket assembly and carefully and more securely welded the two together from the backside so no weld would be visible after I ground the tack weld off.

In all the years since, I haven't had a lick of trouble with it. Had the headers in and out multiple times, along with the steering shaft. No problems.
It was a cheap and easy mod, and does the trick. If you're running manifolds instead of headers, it should still work, the bracket may just intersect with the tube in a different spot.

Just a thought for ya.
