With a cheap 4.8 or 5.3 you will need a turbo to get north of 500hp....
Here's a 6.0L with a cam, valve springs, and headers, that's north of 500hp. Hence, cheap and easy.

Local classifieds have (albeit complete from intake to pan) 6.0s for like $1500.I said nothing about a 6.0 and here’s why. The mass of Ls people that I see rattling off defensively ignore a 6.0 like the plague because they cost $600 instead of the $200-300 that they give for a 4.8 or 5.3 and it causes them to go over budget? A 6.0 is a much better choice though.
I’m not sure what stock motor your referring to that has the same torque as a 5.3, but you certainly are talking about a 500 Cadillac.
The 4.8/5.3 are arguably better under extreme boost/performance conditions than the 6.0. They have the fat cylinders and the 4.8 in particular has a short stroke which makes for a good rod ratio.I said nothing about a 6.0 and here’s why. No wonder you run so much pressure in the 555s!
