I replaced my seat belts with new ones that have the retracting mechanism built in. Eliminating the piece of factory junk in the door jam. I did mine while doing all my body work so I welded a patch in the whole.

Very good decision.. I think that was a very smart move.. As I see I'm not the only one that does not like the original set-up.....
 
You can have your existing ones rewebbed pretty inexpensivley, I found several places that do them for as low as $75 per belt. Cheap insurance, really...and I'll be having mine done if when the car hits the road
