Re: 1984 Cutlass Calais / BBO 455 build thread UPDATE 56K DEATH!

Looks good. Painting your back brake drums with a high temp black paint would look good. Performance Cutlasses especially in black usually look cleaner & meaner without the factory door ding trim and door edge guard.

I would really like to do that, but that is the original paint, and I'd hate to see the diference between sun faded and fresh.

IT LIVES!

Finally got it fired up and man does it sound mean! The cam has a lot more lope to it than I thought it would. Exhaust is finished, and now we just have to tie up some loose ends and install the dash.

The heat melted the logos! Good thing I didn't pay any extra for them, just took 'em off.

We got this thing out on the road for a sec just to see what she'd do, and wow, just a blip of the throttle and she was sideways! I can't wait.

Great job. With all the low end grunt of a well set up 455 traction will be at a premium even with the meats. Nobody wants to have power and still gets schooled by a slower car only because he has better traction. An air bag in the rear coils with adjustments made in air pressure until she leaves two flat equal length burn off with no power break will help traction a lot. You need a separate air tube for each and you will likely end up with like 3lbs in the drivers side and 12lbs in the passenger side. This pre loads the suspension to keep torque/weight transfer from unloading one tire. You can actually get away with just having one bag but its nice to have two for the times you want to load the trunk or car with people especially if you get a little rub on a hard cornering.

Lower control arms to hold things flat & square with no bind also helps as does adjustable uppers to set your pinion angle if you go that far. Setting your pinion angle helps you plant your tires instead of lifting your rear. GM set them up to unload their rear to protect themselves. You can also run like a 70/30 adjustable drag shock up front to help transfer weight without having crazy soft bouncing front end just a little easier lift and a slow let down of the front. Last if she is fast enough to run say mid 12s or better say 110mph plus you will also really start to appreciate drag radials. Both the Nittos & the M&H work great for a real daily driveable street car. Hope that helps and keeps us posted.

Well, I took a couple of pics of the car, I think they turned out well. At this point were just trying to work out the little bugs . . .

Beautiful car..........my 84 Calais was the same from the factory.....minus the 455, 15s, lol, so on. You know what I mean. Black on grey. rallyes..gold pinstripes...I like the 275/60s you have on there. I have 16" GTA rims, 8"wide that I want to have the same profile as yours. Great work on your car, and congratulations. My 87 Salon will never be done.......🙁
