I had a look at the photo of the build sheet. The Y97 RPO code is there, which means that the car SHOULD be a 2+2. As far as I know though, there is absolutely no documentation to support the idea that GM ever built any 2+2s that were notchbacks in the silver/grey paint scheme. The whole idea of that particular model was to build something more competitive for NASCAR racing, and the bubble back window and short trunk lid are part of that package. I still believe that at some point, the car suffered some body damage at the rear, and was converted to a notchback due to lack of availability of the proper replacement parts. If this is the case, the value of the car has been compromised. Its an interesting car to be sure, but will never be particularly valuable unless it is converted back to the correct rear configuration for that model, with the correct parts. As I said before, fix it up and enjoy it.

Take a magnet and check the roof line at the top corners of the rear window. The company who fitted the rear window in the 2+2 rounded off that corner with a hammer to match the contour of the rear 2+2 window. If a stock window has been installed after the 2+2 rear window that corner will most likely be contoured with bondo.

hmmmm what I found,

Y97 : PACKAGE, GSE SPECIAL EDITION

RPO FY LY DIVISIONAL RPO DESCRIPTION
Y97 76 83 SJ OPTION
Y97 84 84 SE OPTION
Y97 86 86 2+2 OPTION

Should there not be some type of code on the metal plaque under the hood that shows body type/style?

The metal tag under the hood will probably only identify the car as a 2 door Pontiac G body. I talked to a guy years ago, who said that he remembered seeing truckloads of these cars going by his home, travelling along Hwy 401 from the GM plant in Ste. Therese Quebec, with the front and rear of the cars covered with tarps because they were only partially built by GM, then shipped to the States to have the 2+2 nose, back glass, and trunk lid installed to complete the cars. Keep in mind, there were only 1,225 of these cars produced, so that the bodystyle could be homologated for NASCAR. I've looked in the trunk opening on my 2+2, and the support for the rear glass is riveted into the trunk opening, and the trunk lid hinges are kind of crude looking. GM wasn't really concerned with having the ultimate build quality on these cars, since it was only for 1 year, and only a limited number were ever produced.

well theres some magnets like you asked

They'll work for a magnet but I wonder what your neighbors think of you..

I don't your car ever had the 2+2 back window. There were also some dealers who customised some of the GP's. I think there was one in Chicago who modified the GP and called it a GT.

yea the one your talking bout was myrtle motors and it had the regualar gp front end on it and a tail on the trunk lid like a 442
this one here its reads as a 2+2 maybe a few of them slipped thru is all lol no eveidence that it had a 3pc window previous owner bout it just like this from the lot

That's the dealer I was thinking of. I like the 2+2 nose but I never liked the rear aero window. Made the car look too heavy for me.

All Grand-Prix 2+2 where built in the Sainte-Therese built plant here in Quebec, I used to live near the plant and I do recall have seen a couple of 2+2 notch roaming around the plant as they where corporate cars and developpement mule but I do not recall seeing one this paint scheme they where maroon and one was all black with no graphics at all only the words Pontiac 2+2 on her.
