BUILD THREAD 1987 Olds 442 Project Build

Set up a rough make shift fixture to hold the column. I wanted to have it in the same orientation as it would be in the car. Prob get going on it in a few days or so (time permitting)

If you need GM p/n's or anything on the column pieces/parts that need replacing as you go, lemme know. Assume you have CD4 (pulse wipers)?

If you haven't already, get a Jeep lower shaft bushing/bearing. The GM one is crappy in comparison.

Thanks to shoedoos for the hookup. $22.84 shipped for the entire kit. I bought mine piecemeal and it was $24 and change. It says 2 bearings, but actually it's 1 bushing and 1 bearing, retainer and clip. When installing bearing into bushing, it's a heavy hand press fit. It doesn't seem like it'll go at first but it will.

Already got it, and I already notched the shaft end for the Jeep intermediate shaft. Plus a new Wiper Stalk (no cruise) and some turn signal cancel springs. I always replace the springs when I crack a column open. They snap over time, and for $2.99 they're cheap insurance. (I got that tip from a veteran at the "Stealership" when I was just a young buck)

That's odd. I guess that was the plan to get rid of cruise control for your setup since you have a cruise lever on it now. Not to many NON-K34 cars out there with pulse wipers (CD4). That lever would be GM part 22510144.

And those springs are p/n 1964784 for RH, 1964785 for LH.

And a new outside hazard warning pull sleeve with the white lettering on it is p/n 12337964.

The plan all along was to get rid of the cruise. I hate that big clunky vacuum disk just sitting there in plain sight. It's an eyesore as far as I'm concerned.

It's all good. Other than the lever, all the other part numbers for the column would not be affected by getting rid of the cruise. The wiper switch inside is different only whether you have or don't have pulse wipers, but that's pretty much it with a tilt/floor shift column.

Yeah, what was I thinking? 🤣

Can't wait for the videos on this as well. There will be video...correct? It's great to have some video how-to's that actually are specific to most of everyone's G-body needs and highly detailed. And more p*rn music while you're screwin'....all the screws back in place. 😛
 
I personally like cruise but planning on using the Dakota Digital set up on my 70, no ugly vacuum pot. Looking good.
