They're good highway gears, but I like the 3.08 in the Gutlass. They're not bad, but still not great for a launch. Are you looking to upgrade? The 2.93 Posi in the Roadmaster isn't bad either , but it could definitely stand to do better on the launch. Even the 3.27 Trac-Loc (FoMoCo LSD brand name) gears in our Crown Vic are still great on the highway. I hear the 3.55 T-L gears are a little worse though.
2.14s are what Lingenfelter put in the dual-turbo Bonneville Salt Flats Trans Am he fielded in the '80s.
I'd keep the 2.29s, add a Powertrax in place of the pinion gears if necessary and put a 700-R4 up front. First gear will feel more like 3.08s and your car will have loooooong legs on the freeway.
I have the 2.14 running now (or at least when I could drive w/o snow everywhere). Even without O/D transmission, she cruises nicely on highway and county roads. Need wet pavement or some pebbles to slip a tire, though.
Did I mention that the Lingenfelter Trans Am hit 207 mph? I think the crew had to tape the tops of the door glass to the body because the airflow tried to suck them out of the car.
