I'm kinda looking for a breakdown of what exactly the computer controls in an 82 g-body, also the location of computer might be helpful as well. I'm just purely wondering what it would really take to make the engine completely mechanical without the computer, im just throwing ideas around in my head. Does the computer do anything with the transmission at all?

I am not positive of exactly what it does, but it has to do with the carb, distributor and trans. To make it function with out the computer you need to get a non computer controlled carb and distributor. You also need to get a kit to control the lockup torque converter on the trans. You dont need to remove the computer or harness, it has its own seperate harness that enters right above the passenger side wheel well in through the firewall to the passenger side kick panel. You can just unplug everything and set it off to the side. It is kinda a pain to get to that harness unless you take out the wheel well or heater box.

ya i was also reading for a little hop-up in performance i can get an intake and carb from a 4.1 which would convert it to a 4 barrel set-up and supposedly would not mess with the computer, I'm guessing anything done to the cam would screw things up but i did hear that my cam was the same in the 4.1 which does use the 4 barrel set up but im wondering if i did go with the 4 barrel, would it just be stuffing gas and air in that the stock cam wouldn't be able to do anything with?

If you are looking more more performance, you are not gonna get more out of a 6 cylinder. If I were you I would get an Olds 350 or 455 and put that in their. You are going to put alot of money into that engine to make it have some decent power.

this is my first car and my daily driver so it can't come off the road for extensive work really so thats really not an option, im honsetly looking for just a little more out of the 231, if i do go looking for performance, i'd be more than happy for somewhere 200-230 hp

Though it won't be V8 like without a lot of cash thrown at it, the 231 motor seems to have a decent aftermarket following. I'm not sure about 230 hp, but you should be able to get 150-200 depending on just how far you want to go. The 4.1 intake and carb should do fine, since your 2 barrel is identical to the primary side of the Q-jet 4 barrel it will plug right in like normal if you keep the computer connected. If the laws in your area permit, add headers and dual exhausts. Add a mild street cam if you want to bump it up a bit more and don't mind digging into the engine.

Dig around on the internet, and you might come across an old article from Hot Rod magazine around '82 or '83. They built up a 231 motor that produced 306 hp. Might be a little extreme for what you want, not to mention expensive! But it should give you some ideas. 😀

Cheers,
Aaron

Does anybody have any part #'s for the 4.1 rochester quadrajet? i found a 4.1 intake that is cheap enough to get whether i use it or not...

i just won a 4.1 aluminum intake off ebay for 95 bucks with shipping so whether i use it or not i can sell it and get my money back anyways, now ill be looking around for a good deal on a 4.1 rochester qjet so if that comes along ill be all set but im not gonna go pay full price for one now because i've got nothing to really lose by waiting for the right deal

q-jets are q-jets, the difference is mostly the idle tubes and jets/metering rods. this is a guess but, you may be able to use a non-CCC 305ci carb with few problems. that's if it's an 80's emissions carb, they were so restrictive that it might be perfect for performance on the smaller engine
talk to this guy http://www.cliffshighperformance.com/index.html he really knows his sh*t (he literally wrote the book on q-jets) and is INCREDIBLY helpful.

i want to get the 4.1 qjet for the fact that i dont need 700 cfm by any means, that would just waste gas mileage as far as I am concerned, the 4.1 qjet also has the exact same primary side as my current 2 barrel and will make it completely bolt on...
