300+hp 305

350 shortblock rebuilt - $500
Vortec heads - $100 used
Vortec rebuild and cut - $200-$350 depending on area
Comp cams 268 - $200

Knowing you have 400hp for a 1/4 of the price of thinking you have 300hp with a 305. - Priceless, maybe

i seen some guys at the good guys car show this weekend that said they had 305's and they were doing 300+ hp on there cruisers now im not trying to race i just want my car to run alot faster to take off like my 01 deville so 300hp is good for me now im debating on whether to build this 350 block that needs everything i have no heads nothing or beef up my 305 that i have now i dont want alot off engine for this because its just a cruiser not like the 66 chevelle im gonna buy lol so what do you guys think what all should i put into it to get alot more hp so far i have a a new edelbrock 1406 new edelbrock performance intake shorty headers new performance distributor new performance spark plug cables what else should i do to get it into the 300 hp what cam do you guys recommend and what should i do about my heads block etc....
How do you like that carburetor ?

300hp is very attainable, 350hp isnt that far off. But dont think headers, intake mani, and some trick ignition with bright colored plug wires will do the trick. Hp from the 305 comes the hard way, heads and cam. World products torquer 305's are good heads. But if you on a budget corvette aluninum 113 heads, and theres a cheaper, iron version that i cant remember the casting number. Both heads would work on HO and normal 305s One last head choice is l31 vortec truck heads, can be bought from gm for 400 a pair, fully assembled. And obviously you would need a votrec mani. Also cam choice is important an comp xe262 or 268 would be real radical, this lunati wouldnt be nice and mild in a Daily driven 305 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/LUN-60101/ But "yeah blah blah get a 350", all the parts can transfer to a 350, the heads would need to be put on a 350 shortblock with dished pistons though, not too hard to find. The two comps i listed would still be nice and lumpy in a 350, but cams are cheap enough that you can buy another one when you wanna upgrade. So in the end with those parts 300-350 crank horsepower on a 305 expect 350+ on a 350.

The "it'll carry over to a 350" theory doesnt apply to heads. The valves are smaller, combustion chambers too small and dished pistons hurt performance whether you achieve the correct compression ratio or not.

The best way to get 300 HP out of a 305... replace it with a 350. 8)

x2.....and if you ever want to get more power out of it than what your looking for now if you stay with a 305 it'll be that much more difficult and costly whereas with a 350 you have plenty of options...plus trying to sell a hopped up 305 won't be easy if you ever do want to trade it in for a 350...

The 113s share the same 1.94intake valves as normal 305 heads, same cc size, granted the torquer 305s would probably suck on a 350. Atleast 75% of those u-pull 350s are dished pistons, that doesnt mean they arent good to use. And yeah these 113s arent the best but they a cheap and will get you a decent ammount of power on either engine. Anything more than 300-350 and you should be prepared to shell out money on a trans rebuild or a new rear end. So wheres the savings in that, if its his project go ahead and drop as big as you can afford and see how long it lasts, but if its you only mode of transportation, bigger isnt always better, for now.

Look at it this way guys. It is a project, or an interesting challenge. Even better you can claim your car is still retains 100% matching numbers. I think if someone was selling a mint condition Cutlass Calais with a 5 speed manual and a 300 HP original (though heavily modified) engine and drive train, it would be a great buy!
