Popped my cherry on a chevy 350 not too long ago. X10 on the book, it was invaluable in my build. Couple youtube video references and you should be good to fly solo. I got a craftsman torque wrench, made in USA for $100, has proved to be a workhorse. GLWB!
PS. Chevy orange FTW!

Thanks..i will def look into it....

Just left "Castillo's Engine Rebuilding" high performance" and got some quotes..Where project elko was rebuilt..

To clean/sand blast/ and cut the block to either 0.30, 0.40 , or 0.60 for crank size $120.00. Total!!

Clean the heads/sandblast $20 for both..and of course i will put my own springs and rockers once its cleaned...

The homie there Efrain said he can find me a good stroker kit for about $600 which will include everything i need to stsrt the built...idk ...i might just take me time on this built...we will see..

Once i get them back i will paint and start the process...

Will keep u updated..

Thats definatley a 2 bolt main. The first engine I ever built was a (sigh) 351 Cleveland with my buddy, and it was pretty simple. The hardest part is paying for everything and DO NOT CHEAP OUT ON ANYTHING INSIDE THE ENGINE!!! If your organized and willing to study a bit it should be easy. P.S I would hold off on painting the engine until you finish building it.

sickkkkkk!
im sure this is gonna be a good build. makes me regret selling my block. it was prime!
its not really hard to put an enigne together. its just the numbers i dont understand, for example, a cams numbers, compression ratios, etc. im sure many of us will learn from watching your build as well.
im not sure if i have my 400 crank still, but if i find it, ill give it to you if you consider that 383.
also have some books (2) at a friends house if you want to borrow them ill pick them up.
goodluck.

Can't wait to see what you do with it Big Saint! I got a low budget engine building dvd that I can make a copy of and send you just to give you an idea of what your going to have to do. Like already mentioned get yourself plenty of good quality tools and a nice organized place to build it and you will be fine. I'd def stroke that bad boy  Most importantly make sure you plan your build out completely before you start. I'd hate to see you sell half of your parts because they don't work with your cam.

I would take a long hard look at the 383 kits.

If you have to buy pistons anyway...$200 and up. Plus the service on the rods($50 or so) to have them re-sized and add good ARP bolts($60) and crankshaft polished or turned($125 turned).

If there is an option go with forged pistons if you ever plan on using nitrous. If not, hypereutectic is okay(I have had better luck with Sealed Power pistons than Keith Black, I also now set them up looser than the recommendations around 0.003 on the piston side wall with a wider ring gap too). 9.1 and lower compression is pretty safe with pump gas and daily driver needs.

I would advise you to go another direction than the heads you currently have if big power is the plan. If its a driver, then have them re-done. The heads you have do not have guide plates and require self-align rocker arms as well as center bolt valve covers only. Moderate, street strip motor will thrive with some Vortec heads. I would avoid 'double humps' or 2.02's its not worth the hassle of either. If you go with some Vortecs, look at new ones or have them magna-fluxed by whoever does your machine work. I bought seven heads to get two 'good' ones!!!

Do some research on oil, and that stuff they took out of oil called ZDDP. Figure how much oil additive or race oil costs per oil change($5 a quart). Then, take a long hard look at a hydraulic roller camshaft that uses off the shelf oil, makes more power and has less trouble.
