what r the casting numbers on the heads, dont waste your time porting them or doing anything at all with them... if you have to touch them... just pick up some aluminum 64cc heads summit, or find some for sale new or great condition! if you need help with that part let me know... budget about 400-800 on a nice set up heads, that should come with springs rods and rockers that can handle the lift of whatever cam you will be using... DONT TOUCH THOSE HEADS, unless they are camels and are already 64cc

also, have you mic'd the cyl walls yet, or found out if its been rebuilt before... or if it need a bore at all... you have to decide if this is going to be a budget build 350, in which case you can put it all back together for a decent price... or if you want some hp out of it... have you spend any money on it, cause after I get through going over some parts and prices, i may convince you to go another route

I'm with bar50 on the heads. You'll be money ahead to just go with Vortec heads. New ones aren't that expensive and used ones won't cost any more to rebuild than the set you have. I couldn't make out the numbers but I'm guessing they are from a TBI truck motor. They have kinda of a funky intake manifold bolt pattern I think. As for the 400 crank, it won't work in that block. You have a 1 piece rear main seal and all 400s had a 2 piece. If you go 383 you will need a 1 piece rear seal 3.75" crank. Don't sweat the 2 bolt mains. Get some good aftermarket (ARP) main bolts and don't give it another thought. When you do your cam selection don't get greedy. The 383 is a torque motor and doesn't need a huge cam especially for street use. I'm partial to Comp's Xtreme Energy line. The lobe design is pretty aggressive like a roller cam would be. Focus on low-end and mid-range power and you'll have a much more drivable combination in the end. This engine isn't going to need to make power above 5000rpm.

Omg!!! For the last three post that were posted, great info...i really appreciate all ur good information..and know im frecking out!! Lmao...i did some online research and WOW!! That 383 kit is madly
Expensive!!almost sh*t in my pants...even used parts on CL are expensive.. :blam:

Ok ok , i think i got too happy and wanted to go big motor right away...i need to slow my roll and focus on trying to build my first engine and just keep it simple with a budget 350 build like skip had mentioned..

I will just have them clean it up and keep it a 350, use the same heads and crank..and justs maybe put in a new cam/lifters...and just replace the springs and rockers...keep it simple...im pretty sure it will still be good for what i want it for...street use...

Thanks again guy for all ur input and stay tuned for the budget build..ahhhhh so much to learn...its ok I GOT THIS...hahahaha

I think that's a good plan for a practice engine. You'll learn a lot from your first build and when you're done you'll have a list of things you'd do different on the next one.

yeh, i just looked up the casting number too, didnt notice the other pics... anyhow, still could be a decent 383 build, period! what are the casting number on those heads, came with three different ones i think... and I have a 400 crank laying around somewhere... the machine work doesnt cost too much, unless you go crazy zero decked etc... keep the hp to around 500ish you will have a great running reliable motor (with the 2 bolt mains)...

Ok on head number on block is (4841) And the other block (4640)..Dont know if they are suppose to match??

But still going to keep it 350...something simple...feel me..

x2 on looking to the next one, as soon as i finished my 350 i started thinking about upping the game before ever installing it. ls1 anyone?

I think it would be wise to go with the 350 or maybe just a .030 overbore (355). My last 355 ran like a raped ape for the week it ran  Anyways I think with a nice intake, quadrajet, and headers/exhaust you will be more than happy. When your done building the engine find yourself a Quadrajet and learn how to rebuild that because it seems as though nobody knows how.
