Re: 3xbrowncutty's Build: New tires!! 3/6

thanks guys.

so in the past week all hell broke loose and nothing has been going right with the car...

I went for another drive since i thought i fixed the differential noise. going down the road everything seems fine, but i can hear the gears humming like they are set up wrong or something. just going to the gas station probablly a mile away. get there re-tighten my lug nuts just to be sure. my buddy meets me there, he hops in and we head out. didnt even get a 1/4 mile down the road and we hear a horrible clunking, coasted to a hotel, took a look my rear u-joint blew apart. :blam: guess i didnt have the clip in all the way. pull her home and left it in the garage.

figured id swap out my "out of balance" axle while i have the driveshaft out. taking the cover off got the pan under it to catch the fluid, wait... there was NO gear lube in it!!!! Guy put rtv and everything on it and told me it was ready to go. called him up and he said he told me there was no lube in it... whatever. i drove 3-4 miles at most all stopping inbetween, no excess metal shavings or anything.

go to fill it with lube today the damn fill plug is broken... was able to fill it by getting a little hose in the top with the bottom bolts tightened. worked fine, just took forever.

all i need to do now is get new u-joints and i'll go for another troubleshooting drive. :x

Sometimes there is a reason to never trust someone elses work. :x

Good you found the problem though!

Re: 3xbrowncutty's Build: New tires!! 3/6

My old boss ruined a brand new rear-end in a '55 Olds we built at work a few years ago.

It was a friday afternoon and a co-worker and myself had just gotten it running, and my dipshit boss came running back right away asking if he could drive it yet.
We told him "No, it wasn't ready, but maybe monday."
Well, saturday the owners stopped by and he just had to drive it up the road to the gas station with them, only a mile each way.
We come in monday morning and he tells us what he did and asks us to listen to this noise.
He pulled the car forward about 5 feet and we both laughed and shook our heads because we knew he smoked the rear-end.
It hadn't been filled with lube, and we wanted to double check everything before he drove it so we could prevent that.
Pulled the pumpkin out and the ring and pinion were completely destroyed.

Moral of the story... Always double check!

Re: 3xbrowncutty's Build: New tires!! 3/6

Got the differential filled up. had to get creative because the head on the fill plug was busted up  just my luck.

U-joints in for good this time. Waiting for the roads to dry again for a test and tune

Also after i got everything fixed my trans dropped a ton of fluid. Dont know where it came out. debating on pulling it for a complete overhaul since it slips out of gear when its cold. what do you guys think?

*Also working on a new valvecover and aircleaner setup  Stay tuned!!

These were the test set. had quite a few imperfections, but the paint hides quite a bit. On the good set I'm going to spray the gold letters first, tape and cut out around them, then wrinkle. I dont think i could just spray the wrinkle and wetsand to the gold, the paint is kinda gummy... Just finished the lid, turned out good 8)

Not sure on what i want to do with the aircleaner lid. Maybe the same sticker i have now or maybe have my buddy hand paint "oldsmobile" script or something. Opinions?
