stand that crank up or you can damage it
stay away from melling oil pumps
and dont go to nuts on the dome pistons.

The crank is junk, its bent already. Why do you say stay away from Melling? I have used them in every engine I have had in this car and never had a problem. And I will have to use dome pistons with these open chambers or be stuck with very low compression.TURNA said:stand that crank up or you can damage it

Im not looking for anything more that 10:1 on compression. Il have to do some looking around about which oil pump to use now. Im trying to find a good place to get my rods and crank from. Im looking at Callies since Eagle and SCAT is chinese made now.TURNA said:melling is now junk
they press fit there gears and when they heat up they start to spin free causing no oil pressure
there is a huge number of failing pumps and melling even admits it
like I said don't go to crazy with the dome. You will regret it when the compression is to high for pump gas.
What kind of limitations do you mean? I havent been able to find any info on them besides specs and ofcourse the bigger valves.565bbchevy said:The 049 heads are good stock oval port head and like bigger valves and have potential to make good power but they will be the limiting factor on how much cam you can run and how much power you will actually make in the end.

Im just looking for 425-450hp and 500-550 lbs-ft. Nothing too radical for a big block. As far as budget im looking at about $2200(+crank and rods now) in parts and the labor and machine work is all free since I will be doing it. I dont plan on getting it done until late winter if even then. Im in no rush since my 400 runs great. Im just trying to get everything sorted out now so when the time comes I know where to stick my money. I never in a million years planned on building a big block but this knida fell in my lap and the more I learn about them and compare prices to small block stuff the more I see that its not a crazy idea for me to go through with it.565bbchevy said:Well 049 heads were designed 40 years ago you can spend alot of money porting and flow testing them but port design has come along way since then with cnc porting and wet flow testing, etc. so if you want serious power you go with aftermarket heads from AFR,Dart,Brodix, etc.
You need to have a plan on the power you want to make and the budget you have to work with to make it happen and you have to be realistic about its application street car, race car or something in between.
Il check ebay, thanks for the tips. I figured out that inorder to get my compression ratio to 10:1 I will need about a 29-30% dome piston using a .045 head gasket with the 122cc 049 heads. The only thing in the equation im not sure about yet is the head gasket so I just picked a common number. I can get a complete piston, gasket, oil pump kit from Speed-Pro for about $650.565bbchevy said:You might want to consider a stroker kit, there is not that much clearancing to get a 4.25 crank in there although it is a time consuming process doing full mock ups but the rotating assemblies are usually only a couple hundred more than a standard kit and with your overbore it would be a 496.
I would get the larger valves in your 049's and your power goals will be obtainable even with a stock stroke and try to get the compression up to around 10:1 with your heads.
They have some desent priced balanced rotating assemblies on Ebay some come with a balancer and flexplate also.
