Build one and be done with it. The only thing worse than wasted money is wasted time. Or visa versa. Both of which you will waste buying unknown transmissions hoping they live. A $150 transmission doesn't owe you much.

and buy another unknown transmission?? If you are going to beat on it buy 2 so you have spare if you are not interested in building one to take the punishment
It's not that I'm not interested in building one, I want to, it's that the funds are limited and rebuilding one, completely (http://www.bulkpart.com/2/product/AHP47001R-K-BOX-1.html) + a converter is more money than I can spend right now. I just need the car mobile. Of course it sounds stupid, and it is to a degree, but it's my only option right now. I can get em cheap from a good guy with a 30 day "guarantee". That's a better shot imo than spending $500 on a maybe. I'd rather bide my time with a new (to me) used unit, then build myself a good stout unit.

I apologize if it sounds like your guy's advice is going in one ear and out the other, but I just don't have the money to rebuild one. Plain and simple.

why don't you take the one that is in your car and rebuild it as you have the funds to do it while you use the "new to you" used one

I was gonna use that one as a core for the guy. He accepts cores, so that would make the price of the new to me trans cheaper.

Sounds to me like your current one would be a great core for you to build. You already know that it's not exploded internally. Rather than get a couple bucks from him for it you might strongly consider putting it in the corner for later if you really plan to build one eventually. TH350 is a great one to learn on -- was my first. No special tools required. It's mostly a matter of staying well organized and being really clean. Best part is, they're cheap to rebuild. A stock rebuild with a mild shift kit and an RV torque converter is perfect for a car like yours. No need for fancy high dollar parts 97% of the time.

The core can't be worth more that $20 or $30, it'd be worth more to you to keep it to build. The guys on here can teach you alot on how to build it so it'll be a strong transmission when you finish it. I would not trust another used transmission that's $150 especially with the way you "use" it....🙂

In in it
The one problem I could see happening is the next one goes out after 30 days and then you are in the same situation and buying another one, unless you would be in a better financial situation later. I'm sure the holidays are making this worse, I feel for you.

Good thought about the holidays, just in case he is thinking about asking Santa for a transmission I hope he doesn't get lazy on the keyboard and ask for a transmission...😀
