It is pretty much a newer version of a 7.5" rear-end. It was installed in the FBodies and Monte Carlo SS. A decent rear-end as long as you aren't putting it in a drag car.

The only difference between a 7.5 and a 7.625 is the size of the ring gear. You can put a 7.625 gear set into a 7.5 and vice versa. Most people refer to the 7.5/7.625 rears as simply 7.5 because it's just easier. If you put the two ring gears side by side you would barely be able to see the difference. Once you install aftermarket gears, there is no difference.

the 7.5 carrier uses 26 spline axles while the 7.625 carrier used the 28 spline axles so it's a nice upgrade since the 7.5 axles are the weakest link

7.5” 3.08 & Down GM 26026250
7.5” 3.23 & Up GM 26026251
7.625” 3.08 & Down GM 26026248
7.625” 3.23 & Up GM 26033477

Pontiac GP,

I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. I was just looking at the RIchmond gear site and see that they do make a distinction between the 7.5 and 7.625 carriers.

there were 7.625 ring gears set ups on a 7.5 carrier but they were limited to the 26 spline axle. I believe the change to the 28 spline happened in 1990 where they opened the hole for the axles to accept the 28 spline axle

I did some additional research on this and it looks like the 28 spline 7.625 carriers did come out for the 1990 model year. There are several discussions at thirdgen.org on this topic.

When talking about g-bodies then, you should never find a 28 spline 7.5/7/625 from the factory. When comparing 7.5 to 7.625 rears in the g-body era, everything should be compatible. If you put a 7.625 ring gear in a 7.5 rear, you have a 7.625 rear. If you put a 7.5 ring gear in a 7.625 rear, you have a 7.5 rear. Is there really a difference then between a 26 spline 7.5 carrier and a 26 spline 7.625 carrier in any given year? Do they have different part numbers? I don't know, but would be interested if someone knew the answer for sure.

Is it possible you might find a 28 spline carrier in a g-body? Sure, but it is highly doubtful it cam that way from the factory since the 28 spline carriers didn't come out until late 1989. I'm sure some have swapped 28 spline carriers from F-bodies to take advantage of the 28 splines and supposedly a better posi unit than was offered in g-bodies.

Also, I was not able to locate any aftermarket gears being made in the 7.625 diameter. All seem to be 7.5.
