78 cutlass W-31 build

That’s great news. Sounds like you really hooked up with a good shop when you went there. Hopefully you can find what you need.
Curious what lights you bought. I’m looking for the same.
Idk what brand they are but they were cheap enough to give them a shot

They take a regular H4 bulb so I'm guessing they should be good to go as is

Ok guys new plan! The shop I work for is owned and operated by the Hasidic Jewish community and there religion prevents them from working or handling money during passover. In the passed we stayed open and operated with a skeleton Crew during passover but this year there's not enough work so the shop is closed. My boss/friend pulled me aside and told me. Finish your car. So this is a first I'll be payed to be there and I'm spending the full week on my own car. Well I don't know if I ever mentioned but in my complex is also 2 machine shops and globex performance. Not to mention my boss owns a Napa that will also be open and he gave me free rain!
Here's the plan.
Friday night bring in the car and start pulling out the motor. This way hopefully I have it apart Saturday before the Machinist goes home. I'm just going to have him look things over so I'm doing the right thing. Obviously Sunday is Easter so that's out you know family and all. Monday morning back to full on thrashing start reassembly! I recently cut open the oil filter that came off it and there was no chunks of metal but it was goopy metallic ugly! Enough to make me think my theory is correct. I'm guessing that with all the issues I had on start up and brake in the assembly lube got wiped off the cam and the oil pressure didn't help. I think the metallic filter is actually Cam and lifters and that's why the tap never went away. So I've got a collection of new parts all scrounged up to make this happen

I've got rod and main bearings cam shafts several gaskets a brand new oil pump and pickup tube I think I have everything to tear it down and put it back together. If all goes well I'm guessing Wednesday ish break it in again? Then send it to globex to have the gears and posi swapped in. Maybe Friday put the trailer hitch on and call haggerty let them know it's a driver!

It's in the shop and the hood is off! I think I have everything to fix the motor but if not I have a backup plan. Worst case scenario I found out my uncle Bob stashed away a 403 from a trans/am in the back of an old school bus on his property that ran good when pulled 30ish years ago. If I need it all I need to do is go get it. But that's worst case scenario. I'm pulling out the 350 tomorrow morning

Probably between your carb issues and the cam going south, it cooked the bearings. I had the same thing happen on an Olds 350. I beat the piss out of that $120 40 year old original motor for over 5 years, including the 1/8 mile, it owed me nothing. A good 403 is decent back up plan.

I'm hoping it will except new bearings and go smoothly because that 403 is 160 miles away and my pickup is still in the diesel shop. I have the company shop truck but I don't think it would make the trip and that would be a heavy load for a minivan. I'm heading to the shop now. First thing I need to do when I get there is find out what happened to my power steering when I was pulling it in. I think a line let go. Then I'll rip it out and pull it apart.

Lunchtime!

It's ready to come out! I'm going to hit a Wawa for a sub on my way to the building to get a engine stand and a good lifting chain. Maybe while I'm there I can find another set of eyes for the removal process. I talked to my cousin Rob again today of course he had to remind me I'm getting old and that I used to have a V8 ready to come out a a g-body in 45 minutes LoL I'm already sore. Not bad though I started a little after 9 and at 12:20 I was done.

Ok I'm back home and if I'm going to update you I better do it now before I fall asleep LoL
I didn't get any help but all my electrons were firing and I actually remembered how to do this stuff. I got it out no problem and nothing broken. I did however notice it needs a heater control valve. I think it always did and I just never noticed with all the other problems it had.

Sometimes it's good to see the empty hole.

I pulled it complete because it's easier to remove and install the accessories on the stand. Barry from B&B machine stopped by after I got the intake manifold off and noticed there's no preload on the lifters in some holes so there's the tap. He told me to get it apart by Monday at 2:00 and he will tank and measure everything for me. After he left I took off the valve covers and oil pan. There's quite a bit of metallic in the oil and everywhere else.

I also took loose all the main caps to look at the bearings there not wiped out but they don't look new anymore that's for sure.

I really don't think a bearing with under 3 hours total run time should look like that and I can feel the groove's in them. There also quite rough to the touch. Nothing much else I can do until Monday morning on disassembly because it's Easter tomorrow but I have until 2:00 on Monday to get it ready for the tank. Besides I forgot to bring my harmonic balancer puller to work so I'll do that Monday morning.
Good thing my bosses are in Florida I turned one of the car-o-liner frame machines into an oldsmopile

New parts on the left and old parts on the right. For now I'm just going to have some iced tea and then take a shower. Tomorrow is Easter so I'm sure the wife will keep me busy around the house.
I almost forgot the new cam going in is a 69 400 cam brand new from my brother his buddy Don from the olds club gave it to him for me it's 472/472 lift 285/287 @50 so it should still sound pretty good for a small block olds.
That's it until Monday
