78 Cutlass Wagon- "CopperTop"

Well my son has been spending a little spare time on the wagon. He's got the 16x8 GTA wheels on now and he's bee working on blacking out the trim. I have a new set of grilles for my wagon so I gave him my old Cutlass Salon grilles. We both like these better because they have only one verticle bar as opposed to 3 on the standard grilles. They're also a little more deep set in. He cleaned and prepped and shot them semi gloss black along with the head light bezels. Next up it the bumpers...

We've decided to black out the pillars and window frames, and later on window tint will give it a nice subtle look.

More pics coming soon...

Ben, looking good. Blacking out the door frames and posts are one of the first things I do to all the wagons I had. Looks sleeker IMO. The grills look nice too. 😀

I can understand blacking out the side window frames and tinting the windows, but my own personal preference would be to keep the bright grills and headlight bezels (even if you just paint them with some silver paint), and definitely keep the chrome bumpers. Maybe I'm just an old fart, but I like a bit of bling on a car.

Lookin' good. You go, Roman. 8)

You are an old fart! Lol!! 😉

On my wagon I'm keeping the outer rim of the grilles and headlight bezels silver to break things up and add a contrast color. If they were all black it would be too much and wouldn't look good. On Roman's car, because it's a lighter color paint it tends to not look as aggressive as say my car. We felt blacking everything out kept light and dark fairly balanced and the lack of bling gives it that low key pit bull presence. Keeping the chrome would add another light element and distracts from the aggressiveness of the black. Ultimately the wheel hoops will be the only shiny bling on the car, and being surrounded by the black tire and surrounding the black wheel centers balances it well. I'm not much of a fan on "newer cars", I really like to see it on pre mid 70's cars though.

In other words, I'm an overly anal designer and things have to be visually perfect. Drives my family nuts and even me too at times. 😉

Roman has been continuing with the painting of the trim. I'm pretty busy with work and trying to spend time with all the kids so he's pretty much doing this on his own with occasional advice from me. I'm impressed, he's doing a great job. Every day I come home from work and see his car and am a bit jealous, I think it looks better than mine! I'm really growing bored of the rattle can black paint on my car and like the vibrance and color of his. He finished up the front windshield and rear glass trim this evening but it was too dark to photograph. I think next is clean and repaint the wheels, and I need to get a new buffer so we can work the paint.

Here are his latest pics he's taken. He also took some time to Photoshop a couple of the pics to get a vision for where we're headed with the car, so I'm posting them too...

Photoshopped- lowered and blacked out. I plan to narrow the bumper and I think we'll be grafting in some driving lights to be a little unique and continue with the pro touring look...

Nice to see he is making some progress on it! I thought I was weird when I was 17 wanting a station wagon, and an El Camino, so did my friends, lol. I ended up with a 2dr Malibu and El Camino (traded my chevelle). 😀

Honestly, my first thoughts driving by it were to buy the car for parts. When I first looked it over up close I wanted it for myself so I could get a little more crazy with Pumkinator and this one could be my daily driver. I figured my son might want to drive an older car to school rather than our 2000 Daewoo until his Nova is done. So I mentioned it to him, thinking that he could bug my wife for me and butter her up so we could buy it. Lol! Well, my plan backfired, he likes it way more than I had expected. I'm glad though, it'll be fun to go to cruise ins and track days together with similar wagons. As "rare" as these are that'll be fun to see amongst all the Camaros and Mustangs.

Longroof79 - Hey thanks! lol

Hey everyone-
Thanks for the support! Lately I've been trying to think of ways I can earn money to put towards Coppertop. I'm only 15 and my city wont allow me to work until I'm at least 16.
I've used Adobe programs for a few years but didn't think of it till my dad suggested "Photochopping" cars to earn a few bucks. I thought that was a great idea and got right to work on it. I've got some examples at this link. I would really appreciate if you guys took the time to just check them out and let your motorhead friends know too! Thanks again everyone for all the support so far!!
