Thanks!

Thanks GP403 I appreciate the link and the confirmation that the washers did work for you. I think I'll order a set and try them. Yes to me .070 is quite a bit on a .500 stud. If someday I would like to switch wheels and upgrade the studs to 1/2 the hole drilled in my axle at .565-.570 might be too big. That's why I'm leary of doing that.

Re: Thanks!

by shoulderred you mean these right?

I stole this picture from Ecklers they are for a Corvette, however Napa has "open end" versions of these in 7/16", 1/2" and 12 mm. If the counter guy gives you a blank stare ... just ask to see the catalog with all the lug nuts listed ... I want to say they use Doorman hardware. I bought brand new 7/16" sized for my Calais wheels. Prior owner had them on with mag style lugs and I really wasn't comfy with the fit.

If you ever want to run 1/2 studs the knurl diameter will be over .60. I don't see a problem opening up the stud hole to put in new studs since I change studs almost never...

Thanks

Thanks for those who have used this forum for what it is suppose to be for......helping others. I appreciate those who have offered honest suggestions. It is possible someday I will take the wagon to the track. If I want to bolt on slicks I may want to go to 1/2 studs at that time. As for now I don't need to. I just don't want to make things more difficult down the line for myself. Besides they knurl the stud so it's a press fit. If I drilled to .570 and later switched to 1/2 stud with a .560 knurl I would be .010 under. No press fit. I guess that's close enough for some people.

well at least you graduated from wanting to drill and tap used lug nuts when all you had to do is google for what your looking for.....we had a few good laughs at the shop over that.......do you realise that if you ever do overdrill the stud size and you don't want to weld the stud in place axles can always be replaced with little difficulty...

I admit drilling and tapping lug nuts is a bit odd, but if you can't buy what your looking for I thought I would try it. Your making fun of that when you weld wheels studs in? Oh boy, I bet you do some real nice work at that "shop" of yours. I think it's time to move on with this thread. Those who are genuine have helped out and to them I extend many thanks.[/quote]

actually we build really nice circle track cars....one of the guys in the shop is racing this weekend in the # 7 truck in the Camping World Nascar series in Atlanta this weekend so you have no idea what the quality of work we do...oh and good luck with fabricating wheel lugs...

Monte Carlo SS wheels take a regular acorn nut. If your wheels take a shanked nut, then you have Z28 wheels. If you are asking whether there is such thing as a metric shanked nut, then yes - I had them when I used 80/81 Z28 wheels on my car until I got the proper SS wheels.

80-81 Z/28 wheel (N90 option)
-15x7 w/ 5x4.75" bolt circle
-Take a shanked nut/washers (or "shoulder" style shanked nut)
-Have 4.25" BS (therefore less of a "dish" compared to SS wheels)
-slightly different (flatter & wider) outer wheel lip than SS wheels
-"Z28" centercaps

86-88 SS wheel
-15x7 w/ 5x4.75" bolt circle
-Take regular acorn nut
-Have 3.75" BS
-slightly different (taller and narrower) outer wheel lip than Z/28 wheel
-"Chevrolet" centercaps

NOTES:
-centercaps will interchange between wheels
-there is also a very rare 14x7 version of this wheel that was optional on base model Camaro's in 80/81
-to use the Z28 wheels on a G-body, you will require wheel spacers. A 5/16" spacer will allow a stock 215/65R15 tire up front and a 245/60R15 out back.

Dr,

When you stated you used these these for your Calais wheels, do you mean the cast aluminum ones, the same as were put on '79 - '80 W-30 cars? Reason I ask is I have a set of these (gray just like the ones I had on the '81) and am in need of a full set of lug nuts. If so, I can just look for an Ecklers or Doorman catalog at NAPA?
