Got some parts - header stuff, fuel system upgrade, rear, cam. We should have everything that we need minus the fuel lines and some minor stuff that we can grab locally. Can hopefully get it all done by Feb (maybe some dyno time) if the weather holds out.
What cam did you go with?

We are putting in a roller that I had Chris Straub (www.straubtechnologies.com) grind. It's not real big in terms of lift, but Chris claims we'll hit our goals and then some with it.

That is the best way to do it. It costs a little more but you get the perfect cam for you combo.

I'm not sure if the is best way to go, but I'm going to find out. The guys that grind cams and guys that really build high output motors say it is the only way to go. Does everyone need one? I don't know. The cam card for this cam is nothing like I would've exected - lift is 'lowish' and the duration is mild, but the exhaust timing events are ALOT different and surprising - no advance is ground into the cam and he recommends to install straight up. Chris said that this cam with the heads, compression, rod to stroke ratio and intake should easily make 500 crank HP somewhere between 12-14 psi which we are running. AND, still meet the mileage goal of 20 mpg (or darn close). So I figured with E85 we should be able to put down 500 to the wheels with no issues. It would be fantastic if it mamaged to put down 500 without the E85, but time will tell.

Regarding the price, it was an extra $250-300. Considering my son has over $2500 in the trans, about $1500 in the rear, decent long block - $2500 without the cam and intake, etc, etc, etc. After thinking about the additional cost for a custom ground cam it doesn't make any sense to cheap out there - IMO. We cheap out on a lot of things like fans, crankcase evacuation, etc. We fabricate everything we can (look at the fuel pickup^^), we're just trying to spend the money in the best places.

Time will tell.

I understand that. I spend money where it counts on mine too. I pretty much had to go custom grind because no one makes an off the shelf,Ls cam for rectangular port heads and a single plane intake. I'm hoping for similiar peak hp numbers as yours. Over 500 at the wheels on pump gas,and mid 10's.
Those turbo cams are a different animal for sure. I was really on the fence about doing a turbo setup before I got deep into my build.

Progress. The rear is installed and the second fuel pump just needs to be plumbed in. The headers are almost done as well. Still need to get the cam installed - still have lots of winter.

It's running with the new cam, upgraded fuel system, new headers, interior updates and rear. And a new set of wheels. If the weather comes a spredicted we might be driving within a week or two.
