Re: 80 Malibu "Revival" build
Well fellas I am the walking dead  Have not gone to bed and pressed through the night trying to get as much of the small repairs done on the body and also begin working on repairing the front spoiler. All I can say is damn I'm glad I'm young and stubborn. Reason for being such a night owl is down here in south texas, trying to do any sort of work outside in mid day to afternoon absolutely sucks with the heat. I've done it quite a few times, but it's just easier waiting till nighttime and spending the night working in comfortable temps. For you guys up north laughing at me, I'd rather sweat than freeze my *ss off trying to work on my car. Tried it in maine with 15ft snow banks and I'll take the heat and get out of the freezer
😛 .
The pics show, IMO, the two most trouble areas I've seen on almost all malibus from 78 and up. With a little bit of metal work, fiberglass, and metal to metal filler, she's starting to come back. The spot where the body meets the middle post needed some attention as well. There was a gap along with the paint being a little iffy there, so I decided to put some metal to metal there as well to smooth it out and fill in the gap. I still need to add one more layer in certain spots to get it perfectly level and then my focus will shift to prepping both front and rear spoilers.
The only repairs I'm having to do on the front ss spoiler is filling in the 6 bolt holes, 3 per side, where the lip of the spoiler met the fender. The first step was just laying a layer of fiberglass on the inside of the spoiler lip to provide a back to fill the bolt holes. I wadded up bits of tiger hair, or fiberglass strands, dipping them in fiberglass resin, and shoved the wads into each hole to provide filling and reinforcement rather than just filling it with body filler. Once I sand down the strands and resin, I will then use body filler to fill in the small gaps in the strands.
I should be sanding on the rear spoiler shortly. It's hard to see in the pic, but the end of the spoiler closest to the camera has a big dull red spot. When we first painted my car, I wanted to get it done for a big car show at a local high school. Well we happened to get it done the night before and even managed to color sand the top half of the car. In the midst of buffing, my old man left the buffer on that end of the spoiler for too long and it took a chunk of red of about the size of my hand. So we managed to break out one of his touch up guns to quickly spray on some single stage for a quick fix. Now I want to do it right with chunks of red flying off.
Here's just a few pics of the bu without the spoiler. Doesn't look too bad but I'm starting to hate my own wheels now thanks to some people....
😳 I think I just need to lower the rear end and they'll look better. Look kinda dorky with the body sitting high than the top of the tire. Yes I'm tired and I'm ranting lol but I shall continue to work through the day.
