Re: 80 Malibu "Revival" build (Update)

I have two 400w 12 inch Dual subs with a Rockford fosgate 2000w punch amp. I have a 2007 kenwood radio that I bought new back in 09 for $200.

I didn't want to spend a lot of money on subs and now I'm considering taking them out. The box I made takes up that little raised area of the trunk and that would be the perfect spot to move my battery to.

Re: 80 Malibu "Revival" build (Update)

is it the older style rockfrod amp ? are you planing on getting rid of the subs if so id like to buy the amp from you

Re: 80 Malibu "Revival" build (Update)

I like that new front air dam there. Are you going to refinish it 😱 make it nice and shiny :?: Would one of those bolt onto my Regal?

Re: 80 Malibu "Revival" build (Update)

One of my subs isn't sounding too good but I'm thinking of making a small box for a regular 12 and use the amp to power that. It might be one of the older amps I'm not sure.

No the front spoiler is specific to malibus and el caminos and I've never heard of one being on a regal. And I don't know if it will mate up to a regal's front end. Yes I'm gonna paint it and make it look all shiny like the rest of the car 8)

Re: 80 Malibu "Revival" build (MOTOR'S OUT!)

As of this morning, I finally got both the motor and trans pulled. When I tried to pull the drivetrain together, the transmission slipped out of the torque converter and dropped down onto the ground. So now in a while I'm going to drop the pan and start checking the bottom end in hopes the crankshaft is in good shape and doesn't need to be turned down.

wow, I have never seen that before.

Re: 80 Malibu "Revival" build (MOTOR'S OUT!)

Neutral Drop Bust the case? Only seen this in drag cars.. :wtf:

Re: 80 Malibu "Revival" build (MOTOR'S OUT!)

Definately not a neutral drop. When the driveshaft banana peeled itself in half, I believe the half that was still attached to the transmission somehow hit the street and shoved the back of the transmission upwards.

Long story short, I was cruising on the highway at 70mph, and a really bad vibration started up and the driveshaft obliderated itself. I think one of the stock counterweights fell off as the driveshaft was the only stock piece in the car. It took the floors and trans with it. At first I thought the gas tank exploded. I didn't even notice that a piece of the driveshaft came up through the floor and punched me in the side of my leg. The floors have already been replaced with donor floors out of a cutlass.

So for all you ricers, tuners, and joes out there wondering what my horsepower and torque specs are, please refer to the pics lol

Re: 80 Malibu "Revival" build (Engine Disassembly)

Another update. Began disassembling the motor down and checking parts. The pistons appear in good shape with some slight scratches on the sides, possibly from when it overheated.

One thing I'm a little embarassed to mention is I finally found out what oil pump I have! It's an M55HV or high volume pump. Now this leaves me really confused as I thought I had a plain jane cheap melling oil pump which may have been why my oil pressure dropped as much as it did. But the high volume pump is probably what saved my motor when it overheated to 260-280 degrees.

Re: 80 Malibu "Revival" build (MOTOR'S OUT!)

Well I'm done for the night and the weekend. Won't be doing anything till next saturday.

One of the crank journals has a slight ridge from where the two seperate rod bearings were distanced. Hopefully it won't need to be turned, but it appears that the block won't need a hone or hot tanked. I'm having my personal engine builder come out next weekend and inspect the components and teach me what to look for when it comes to worn parts.

I'm rather upset at my father right now. I found out he is the one who decided to put in the "high volume" oil pump. When we first built this motor I was 14 and didn't have a clue. His reasoning for putting it in was "that's what all the race guys told him to do." In one sense I see their point, but my father's experience is strictly with mopar, not chevy. He didn't do any research into how to properly build a sbc. After spending some time researching oil pumps, his decision may have caused more harm than good.
