Re: 80 "Franken-Bu" Build (Engine Getting There)

Trust me there's oil. I submerged each piston completely in oil before placing in the block. Used WD-40 and a lint free rag to wipe down the chambers as well. Check the second pic, you can see oil sitting on the top of the piston and oil drain stains on the deck.

I put them in based on the writing on the piston being right side up and the rods are numbered anyways.

Do you have the rods on the right way? Who put the rods back on? The machine shop should have known the right way i fthey are the ones that did it,

Re: 80 "Franken-Bu" Build (Engine Getting There)

The rods are on right. They were put on right 5 years ago and I didn't need to remove the rods and pistons this time.

They didn't pull the pistons when they resized the rods?

Re: 80 "Franken-Bu" Build (Engine Getting There)

He told me he didn't have to pull them and that the rods were in really good shape. He said at some point they had been "shot peened".

Ah, that would explain why they were ready to be picked up early, he just checked them, he didn't need actually resize them.

Re: 80 "Franken-Bu" Build (Engine Getting There)

The receipt shows that he cleaned up the rods and polished the ends. He explained that when the rods are shot peened, they dent inward then flare out as a result of some type of metallurgy. So he smoothed'em out and what not, but now everyone is making me wonder cause I paid him $40 to do it as cheap insurance.

$40 for him just clean adn check them is probably right. Ya the shot peening helps relieve stress in the metal.

I never really liked the look of the malibu's, and still don't lol. But out of everyone I've ever seen, yours takes the prize. I'd drive it! 😀

Have you rotated the engine yet? I'm sure you would have to get some of the pistons in I was just curious
