Taking advantage of the tropical November weather.

So dissapointed - I didn't find any money, drugs or dried fries under the seats or carpet! The pass side floor did have 'flour' to, I assume, to dry up a leak. The brown stuff at the edge of the pass side floor seam is some sort of tarry film. The plastic wire guides at the rocker seam didn't hide any rust. I plan to do a deep cleaning of the carpet come next spring.

My first new car. Yah, took that one apart to rustproof as well as the others to follow.

1975 Scirocco, no winters, sold it in 2004.
Next toy:

Wife's daily, 1989 GMC - bought in 2001. I said at the time I would never, ever get a used GM that was never rustproofed - spent a lot of time to get it to look like new. In my opinion, still one of the best looking modern GM trucks!
And another renewal project:

1995 GTI Vr6, 5 owner, high mileage, never rustproofed - yet another rejuvenation project. This had minor chassis rusting at the floor seams but the paint was 90% original. Replacing headgasket and cleaning the carbon build up.

Time goes on but some things in one's life never change.....same garage, same fool, different project.

Hey, it keeps me from wandering through my life aimlessly.

I should call this thread ' Rejuvenation and Preservation'. I intend to keep within the factory built parameters but make improvements to add longevity - such as adding washers to fasteners/plastic connections, re-enforcing (using JB Weld) plastic studs - all the stuff you normally can't see in their installed state. I prefer to keep the original bits when possible rather than shop for replacements.
Just before the outside temps hit the normal for the season numbers, I lubed the wiper linkage pivots and arms and put dabs of heavy grease into the screw/bolt mounting holes(overkill but I like to do that). Now it's time to clean the garage so I can park my daily inside as well, next to the SS. I do snowplowing for the city and they can call anytime. I prefer not to have to

scrape ice and snow off my windows at 3:00 AM during a storm to rush to the yard.

The last few times I found the parking brake pedal not catching securely and tending to self release. I removed the assembly and it seems the grease that is at the pawl is dry and stiff. It prevented the pawl from engaging cleanly into the teeth.

The fusebox through the cowl is some sort of design. I'm surprised why this is not a failure prone part. The weather seal is on the inside part of the assembly. There does not appear to be a seal at the connectors and relies on grease packed terminals to keep out moisture.

That has been rectified by cleaning out the old grease and applying new dielectric grease to the connectors. Also a bead of crack filler putty around the perimeter of the connector completes that improvement.

I had a battle with the distributor hold down bolt.

Is this coating on the firewall original or was it applied later on? There is cracking of the sealer at the left side of the HVAC box. What about that ground braid from the middle of the cowl, running behind the trans dip stick and going into the HVAC box seam - normal?
