Sorry about that, I keep forgetting about that. Not that I'm bending to you, I'll have to find a better pic. Those protesters need reeducated not to give a flying aboout birds but to relearn the reason for the lights.
I'll never forget that smell and the smoke plume in the air days later you could see and smell it all the way down here at the Jersey shore. When I heard the first plane hit I went in to watch on TV and I thought how could a pilot F that up so bad. That's when the second plane hit and I thought OMG that's no accident
I know I'm old too (66). But flying the flag is the LEAST anyone can do to commemorate that awful day. Living here in NYC it is hard not to be overwhelmed with grief every 9/11. Then again I am the oldest person on my block, as well as the only Veteran. Most of my neighbors are immigrants and are very hard working decent people. I try to lead by example and usually that works. But the native born neighbors are just as ignorant of what it means to be an American. If anything, the immigrants are MORE grateful to be here than the natives. They KNOW what the world is like and busted *ss to get here for their kids. On a nicer note try and catch the film "The Trees" on your local PBS channel. It is about the "survivor tree" taken from ground zero, nursed back to health, and then returned to the site all these years later. It's pretty moving.
We live in a world where politics and partisanship override patriotism and common sense. Don't forget the lack of outrage over an elected representitive to Congress called what happened 18 years ago "some people did something"
Just shows how far we've come - or maybe fallen.
Then again, when I was in school you didn't learn about WWII or Korea in school either even though it was in textbooks - I guess it was too "recent" to be covered. Maybe this is something of the same?
I am probably among some of the youngest people who have a clear memory of that day. Among my peers maybe 60% have some memory of it, but any younger and I doubt I would be able to remember it. Also I was at home watching the morning news with my grandmother who was babysitting at the time so I watched it in real time. I don't have have a lot of recollection of Shanksville or the Pentagon but I very much remember the Twin Towers. I have family who used to live in Brooklyn and I remember seeing the Twin Towers out of their upstairs bathroom window.
Of all dozen or so houses on my street the only ones who had the Flag flying today were myself and my grandparents who live next door.
If you haven't been to the World Trade Center since, you should absolutely make an effort to see the memorial and the museum. These pictures are from last summer.
