I've never heard of that. Are they available or home made? Most books advise oiling or greasing the seal/shaft so that doesn't happen. If the shaft is splined I usually wrap it with masking tape to protect the seal. A companion flange is pretty smooth at the end.

You make them yourself. Its a oldtimer trick and generally were made out of tin shim stock but you can cut one oug of a soda can.

I ran that idea past a friend and he said what I was wondering. How do you get the sleeve off the shaft if it is past the seal? Am I missing something? A companion flange or damper would block the tool.
