I personally would go with a low-gloss/satin enamel. You likely need it to be resistant to fuels/oil. Not that it would be impervious, but should hold up well.

You can always go with a flat base/satin clearcoat maybe if you're fancy. At least it's clean now.

I seen a couple of these painted and they look like poop.

I would use engine paint on it.

Just seeing what others have used out there with success

I've repainted mine with Duplicolor satin engine paint and I'm not impressed with the color, or finish. It looks too flat.
I have painted the bottom side of my hood satin black. I bought the paint at Tractor Supply. It was the equivalent to John Deere blitz black....or hot rod black. I used it with a hardener. I'm sorry I didn't use that on the HVAC box.
It was a Valspar product at the time. I believe they no longer carry the Valspar line of paints.

I used the Duplicolor on mine. It looks okay but Im not a big fan of anything in an aerosol can. I used the low gloss black. If theres any old paint on it go to Pep Boys and get a can of paint stripper made for plastic bumpers. Ive used it on a ton of plastic parts and it works really well. I also used Bulldog on the box before I painted it. Motor was done in gloss black.

When I redone the non A/C heater box that I picked up years back I used a semi-/low gloss gray that I believe was for exterior trim. I have actually trying to remember what it was I used for the A/C box I need to redo. The finish on the heater looks good, a bit better than the molded finish when new.

That looks pretty nice, Mich,
I agree that rattle can paints don't seem to compare with using a spray gun. First off, the spray pattern, or fan, is not as wide as you would get with a spray gun. At least with a spray gun you can adjust the fan accordingly.

For me it would be a semi gloss black. I plan on doing the firewall, brake booster, inner fenders, rad support, and bracing in the Eastwood Chassis Black. It gives a nice semi gloss appearance. This will flow the color of the firewall and A/C box together. I also like this because it draws attention to the real bling which is the engine.

That looks original in appearance. It even shows the little hairy flecks in the fiberglass. The color is good as well...more grey than black, which is how the original box looked like.
