 I was leaving work one day and as I was leaving the parking lot I pulled up to one of my friends that flagged me down because I forgot something. As he hands me whatever it was I forgot I heard a loud BANG and it was like a scene out of a war movie when a bomb goes off. All I heard was a ringing and the look in my friend's face told the whole story. He about sh*t himself  That was the scariest drive home waiting for the passenger side airbag to randomly go. I got home and pulled the fuse and havent had an issue since but my Airbag light stays on. Needless to say I f%#king hate airbags! The car is a 97 Cavalier. My dad got me a new airbag/horn piece but im not sure if im ready to replace it just yet.

I have seen people's faces after a minor accident and the bag made a mess of their face...did you ever figure out why your's went off? and as for air bags I think a 5 point harness is safer
I never found out why it went off I dont really wanna start messing with the sensors or wiring either because if the passenger side goes off il need a new dash and windshield

I know this "expert" with stereo installs but he like to smoke way too much and it's not cigarettes. He installed a sytem in the private vehicle of an Provincial Police Officer. The police officer brought the vehicle back because the air bag light kept coming on. The "expert" has spliced into the yellow wires to hook up the system... :blam:

At a local Future shop they blew both bags in a new car installing a remote starter... :blam:

Is it such a great idea to remove the airbags?

They are an important safety device, and have saved a lot of lives.

I know sometimes they go off when they shouldn't (as posted above) but these are very rare occurences.
I have heard lots of similar arguments about seat belts as well.
We can construct circumstances when any safety device will be adding to injury rather than preventing it, however these are freak accidents and no device can be suitable for every possible circumstance.

I will add one thing, ABS is worse than locked wheels on gravel or more to the point right now, loose snow.

Don't forget the only really smart safety device is sat in the driving seat, use it wisely and the secondary safety hardware should all be redundant.

Roger.

Roger, I've had over 30 years of driving in the winter with no accidents and the Jeep that I'm driving now is the most capable vehicle I have driven in the winter. The reason I see the bags as unsafe is that if I do get into an accident I want the be able to see what is happening and have the ability to take evasive manoeuvres if need be. The bag disorients the driver and blocks the steering wheel during that crucial period. I like the seat belt since that aids you to stay in place in order to stay in control of the vehicle.
What I do find strange is that cars are permitted on the road in the winter without 4 snow tires. That is dangerous and no different than riding around in the summer time on bald tires.

air bags kill many people in collisions under 30 that didnt require them to go off. When my stepmom crashed going less than 35 mph in a Grand Cherokee limited 5.9 the airbag sent her to the hospital and the accident was not very serious. The vehicle wasnt even damaged badly at all and didnt require major body work, but it made serious burns on her face and almost broke her nose. She was traumatized and didn't drive for at least a month. In a similar collision where due to whiteout conditions I misunderstood that a street continued when in actuality it became a driveway at the end of a road, I slid sideways into a tree doing almost 40 mph and I was completely uninjured because no air bag popped out and hit me in the face. That was in my 94 box blazer.

Air bags suck, especially in older used cars. Gun powder decays over time and is less stable. A car that may have hit the back of a garage wall, a trailer hitch, or a parking block years ago is just waiting to go off in your face at any moment - an unsafe ticking timebomb which can easily be set off by a pothole. I'm not telling most of you something you didn't know. Of course the newer cars that cave in to minor collisions are better off with airbags, but seatbelts will do just fine!
