Air Conditioning "muffler" ?

I am not sure if this is called a muffler or not but what does it do and is it necessary? I am thinking about making custom ac lines and would have to eliminate it if I do.
This would be on a completely new but otherwise stock style set up.

It is called a muffler, and no, you don't have to have it. We have an R4 compressor on my brother's car (LS swapped 78 Z28) with custom made hoses and no muffler. Also, the R4 came stock on many applications without a muffler, like the 88-98 C/K trucks....

It just makes the compressor quieter. Here's the 3rd gen Camaro...
