I'm sourcing parts for my 3.8 to 350 olds swap.

I'm not going to run a/c woith the 350 and was told I need the alternator on the pass. side due to belt tension issues.

I'm wondering what olds cars had the alt. mounted on the pass. side. would it just be oldsmobiles with no a/c or what?

This info will definately be helpful at the junkyard.

Any 1968-1980 Olds (big or small block) without A/C. Some of the 65-67 cars will also work, but there were some variations in the brackets. The 68-80 brackets are all the same and have two sets of holes for the SBO and BBO.

Thanks Joe! I went to the yard today and found all the parts I will need.

Just a quick question, will I need to get an early-model distributor (year range??) if I am not going to run the computer? I know thats the case with the carb, but was wondering about the dist.

A Couple other questions:

Can I swap a fan from a clutch style mount to a solid style mount with no problems? I want 5 blades instead of 4 on the solid mount fan.

Also can I use my power steering reservoir from my v6 on the bracket for the v8? That way I know it will work.

Thanks

Did you get the pulleys also? They are unique to that set up.

You will need an older HEI dist. I believe they used them until 80, but I am not sure. Just make sure it has a vacuum advance canister and it is from an Olds engine and you should be good.

I can't help with the other questions.

That's the correct alternator bracket. Be aware that you either need a non-A/C water pump and pulleys or you need the uber-rare HD cooling pulleys from a W-30. The non-A/C pumps are shorter and the pulleys are different as a result. HD cooling cars like the W-30s used the longer pump and special pulleys to match with the non-A/C alt bracket. Frankly, I've never had a problem with the short pump on any Olds motor I've built.

You should try to find a 6+ blade clutch fan, but if you currently have a five blade clutch fan that should work if the length is correct.

The Saginaw pumps are all the same, but I'm not sure which reservoir or pulley was used on the V-6. The Olds setup in your second photo is what you need. Be aware that there are two spacers that go between the block and the pump bracket, one at the bottom of the front cover (about 3/4" long) and one between the bracket and the side of the block under the exhaust manifold (about 5/8" long). Failure to reinstall these spacers has led to more questions about belt alignment than you can imagine.

alt. bracket and pulley questions

Something new has come to my attention.

The pulleys that I am getting are from a '77 olds and are "deeper" (the belts are closer to the front of the car) than one say from the 80's (with no a/c like the one from '77). Is this a correct statement?

I am putting these '77 pulleys on a SBO that will be in an '83. will there be any clearance issues? will these pulleys push the fan out too much.

Why not get a 7 blade clutch fan?

because I can't find one

another question. is it ok to beadblast pushrods? the ones I just picked up are pretty bad, and i'm wondering whether or not they are usable.

(If you are reading this, thanks again Craig 🙂 )

How are the push rods bad? Are they rusty or just covered with oil sludge?
