Any ideas on how to correct the problem if it occurs?

Summit sells anti-hop and traction bars for G bodies. I am sure you can try different types of springs and shocks to help, but I dont know exactly which ones to try.

Gotcha dan2286, the picture is clearer now, thanks. For some reason, until now I only associated those bars with drag racing.

The only upgrade was the gears. Stock rears for 78 only went as low as 308's in the El Camino. I knew it was only a matter of time before I powdered it. I drag race it quite a bit & got away with it for a couple of years with my 355 C.I. After installing the 383 I knew the rearends days were numbered. ( 6 passes actually ). The added power resulted in no traction. I could gouge it from a 3000 RPM roll & break the tires loose at will. This made for some laughable starts at the strip. I started trying to find a tire that wasn't too sticky but would still provide me with a decent launch. Long story short, BOOM. In my opinion, the 7.5 is not worth trying to beef up. Yours should last, as long as you don't get a good bite & doesn't have excessive wheel hop. There are guys out there that are running some high horse powered machines with a 7.5 without problems, I wish I were one of them. As it is I am currently putting a furd 9 inch under mine. Well, i think that me and a buddy of mine must be an exception to the 7.5 rule. I have been abusing my 7.5 rear for 9 years now both with a 3.42 gear and now my 3.73 rear. I have been using the Auburn posi unit and nothing else to the rear. I launch at 3400 on the line and jerk the tires off the gound with my Mickey E.T.s and haven't broken it yet. I keep the fluid changed twice ayear and add the posi additive to it and run sythetic fluid. This is behind my 406 sbc with 430hp and 437 trq at the wheels.

Now my buddy in his SS Monte runs a 383 and a stock 7.5 with 4.10 gears and runs his at the track with basically the same setup as me and pulls the tires off the ground about 18 inches and carries them for about 6 ft and he runs in the low 11's and has been abusing that rear end for 3 years with this combo.

I hear this argument all the time and i don't know why people put this rear down so much. I have had great success with it. I am how ever going to a 12 bolt with 33 spline strange axels and a full spool only because i am going to be hitting the rear with a 250 shot of NOS on the line. So, i think that might be to much for the 7.5. Other than that i say go with the 3.42 gears they are perfect for the highway and cruising and an occasional romp at the track.. The rear will last like most have already said stay away from the wheel hop and speed shifting cause that is when the drivetrain takes the most shock. I think it will last for you, good luck. I hope this sheds some light for you.

406 I agree with you... Last year at the track not one car out of the metrics (g body) running the thunder car class busted a 7.5 rear end unless they smacked a wall or something. Nothing wrong with the 7.5 unless your really going to bang it hard like you planning to do...

Well, good luck with your 7.5's. I wish I had some luck with mine. As I said, there is always someone that is running high H.P. machines with no problems. I wasn't one of them & will not put one back under my sled. - Jon

i agree that the 7.5 is stronger than what people think. the car i had before this one was a 91 camaro. and with a stock 3.42 gear and a torsen diff out of a 02 camaro i went 1.43 60fts often. 6.70's at 105mph in the 1/8th mile. but that was on a footbrake leaving at about 2500rpm. i doubt it would last like that with a trans brake. on a budget i would get some moser axles and keep a higher gear due to the size of the pinion. the lower the gear the smaller the pinion and it breaks.

Well i am glad that i am not the only one that thinks these little 7.5 are decent good little rear ends that can take a beating. 😀

There is a 9 inch on ebay for little over $700 that includes housing axles and bearings no brakes or third member
But the third members and gears are cheap spend like $150 from some one on craigs list or Racingjunk.com then a set of brakes from a junk yard $50 $900 complete but u know ive seen used 9 inches for around that price too so either way...get a posi for the 7.5 and drive it on the street and ull be fine once you start racing get that p inch 8.8 of 8.5 what ever u choose in there
