Another vibration thread!

check your rear axles to see if the axle bearing has caused a groove in an axle, also check to see if the pinion seal is leaking on the rear, that is an indication a problem with the bearing
Thanks will check those out! I just replaced the pinion seal a few weeks ago, had a very very slight leak. Didn’t see and play back there. I think I’m going to bite the bullet and have the driveshaft balanced and u joints replaced.

When did your vibration start? Before or after the pinion seal replacement?

What streetbu said did it start after the pinion seal replacement? If you didn’t tighten the pinion nut right that’ll give you all kinds of issues. Correct way to do it is remove the rear gear carrier measure pinion preload before disassembly then tighten but until you get desired pre load. Flat rate way is count the number of threads showing past nut mark the nut to the pinion then on reassembly tighten just a hair past your mark with same number of threads showing

Vibration occurred before the pinion seal. I was very careful with pinion preload.

Tires have less than 500 miles on them. The car did sit for 4 years or so but the vibration also started before that. I always thought it was suspension related so first thing I did when I took it back out was replace the entire front suspension and steering shaft. The only thing I did around the time it started was replace the body bushings. I just checked them and they are all torqued correctly. I’ll check the axles as suggested, tires to make sure they were balanced correctly, and then if that checks out driveshaft balance and u joints.

Well tires checked out okay. So I pulled the driveshaft and it’s off to the shop tomorrow to get balanced and new u joints. The front joint seems like it definitely has too much play. Maybe my memory is incorrect and I only changed the rear joint years ago. I should start writing stuff down...

Also, there seemed to be a wear mark on the driveshaft that I never noticed. Not a gouge, but still concerning. And the exhaust is not touching it. Maybe it was the old temporary exhaust I welded up after trying to rebuild the 307 years ago.

u-joints don't have any play...if they do they are junk. I doubt the driveshaft caused the viabration, if the driveshaft is unbalanced you'll feel it long before 50 mph

Good to know about the driveshaft I wasn't sure. I replaced the u-joints the other day, but every time I try to take the car out it rains so I have not test drove it yet.
Got the heavier-duty joints, job wasn't too bad...was able to do it without a press...just used a few sockets, big hammer and torch to get the plastic retainers out. Didn't need a shop to press them in like I originally thought.

Well, I replaced the u-joints and took it out for a drive. Not the cause of the vibration, but it only cost me about $50, and I no longer have the weaker stock joints in.

I do think I found the culprit though. Torque converter shudder. By chance I saw an ad for those 2oz tubes of Shudder Fixx and added it. Took it for a drive and now it's smooth! No vibration. Changing the converter to match my 383's power band better was in my horizon, looks like I'll be doing it sooner! Thanks for all the input and help!
