Once a year I drive from Minnesota to upstate NY and back (business trip). On the way back, it's typically just me, an empty pickup truck, and a couple days' worth of time on my hands. I usually try to hit up all the good-looking junkyards and interesting Craigslist ads I can during that return trip.

For this year I'm doing a bit of pre-planning, trying to line up stuff I'm looking for in advance (searching car-part.com, etc). I've noticed a yard called "Elite Motors" in/near Detroit shows up a lot. Based on what they've got inventoried, it would appear they're some kind of G-body Mecca.

Anybody ever heard of this place? Been there? Know anything about it?

Also: I've never been to Detroit. Can any locals comment on whether Joy Road is a joyful sorta place, or one where you need eyes in the back of your head?

I have never heard of this place and to be 100% honest, Joy Rd is not somewhere I like to frequent. I will look into this and get back to you seeing as though I have a g body as well and would certainly want to know about this so-called g body mecca.

Curious, I streetviewed it:
14303 Joy Road Streetview.jpg

It is a very small lot were cars were dumped behind a an auto repair shop after being stripped. Classic chop shop set up.

Fence has no talent graffiti, that isn't a young struggling artist expressing himself, which means that it is a jackass marking his territory. He can have his Sh!thole.

Ghetto Trip advisor say "Avoid this place". If you go, wear Red.

Did a bit of looking on Google Maps, and saw that it's just a few blocks from a place called Ryan's Pick-a-Part. Their claims to fame include low prices, decent turnover, and a recent shooting in their entryway (n)

There are some large high volume yards in the greater Detroit area. The two self serve yards you should check out are Ryan's Pick a Part and Parts Galore. There are multiple locations of each. For Parts Galore, I prefer the Warran Ave location since they have a large classic section. There were quite a few G bodies last time I was there. Happy hunting.

Most of the Junk yards as you know have been well picked over and cars that old just crushed. I don't think I've been to a scrap yard in 10 years and I use to enjoy it. Swap meets ruled for a while and they are also fading. I would try using this sight with a wanted parts list and the route you plan on using and see if you have any luck with that. If you plan on hitting some junk yards I would do some home work on the internet or phone to see if they have anything to your interest which you probably do. Scrap Busters (Wayne) and Regal (Howell) are close to your previous place and your best chance would be Regal. Have you ever just gotten of the beaten path? There are a lot of yards upstate with older stuff - Fox in Harrison has acres of cars and trees growing through some, Cooks is close also if you were to take a lazy ride through the UP.
