I am (was?) guilty of this. We luckily sold off two cars last year (my Turbo Regal and Natasha's '02 B4C Camaro), and I have my TBSS up for sale now. More is not more, less is more. I want to be at a point where I can enjoy what I have - not have it run my life. I think I am getting there.
Smart *ss. 😉 I saw a Super Bee station wagon on Bangshift.com last night. Very cool "what if" concept - but there is no way I would spend $40K on it.
I have learned over the years that add up everything you spent & try to figure the labor cost if possible, then divide by 3. That would be what you'll get out of you ride when you sell it. You always hear "I have $XXXX into it, paid $XXXX for the car, did all this work, so I won't let it go for less than $XXXX." I accept my losses on any personally owned projects. If it was for outright resell, I would make sure I have proof of cost & look into a tax ID number so I don't pay taxes on what it needs. But I'm not that lucky (or unlucky) enough to do this for resell.
I swear, you must live in the most economically depressed area in the country, since the cars you have had for sale are real buys given their cleanliness and price.
There were over 4,000,000 Tri-5 Chevys built. Its easy to invest in fender tooling or trim if there is potential to sell 40,000 pcs of them. It is a little harder when there is 10,000 of a car built or 500 built. Owners of original cars should love clones because the guy buying the clone parts is lowering the reproduction part cost of his "real" car.
Some shiny paint, good driving, non rustbucket, 2dr tri-5's went across the block tonight and barely got to $20K. A $5K Tri-5 likely wouldn't have shiny paint and a fresh drivetrain or only have 2 doors... at least not in the last 20 years.
I ran across a rust free texas 2dr hardtop '57 ford Fairlane at a swap meet last year that was almost all there but needed a resto for.. $2,500. there was at least 30,000 people at the swap meet and it was begging for a buyer. Barret Jackson didn't make its owner think it was worth a fortune, but everybody who walked by it did the calculations in their head and said "nope". If it was a Chevy, it would not have been there on Saturday, because everybody knows some magical "A-hole Rich guy who is ruining the hobby" will keep them from being upside down in it.
The law of supply and demand dictate that if you want what everybody else wants and there is a finite supply of it, you will have to pay more for it.
Don't buy what everyone wants, buy what is a good value now and people will want in the future.
