hi guys i have a 86 regal (307). BTW it has new alternator and new battery. Last week i blew the fuseable link from the battery ground to the body because i had to jump the car because i left my lights on... i accidently touched the link with the positive clamp. I replaced the link temp. with same gauge wire (14 i think), till i can pick up a new one. Ever since that the alternator wouldnt charge the battery. I had time to work on it today and found that the white wire from the clip in the back of the alt. ("exciter wire") went bad it had to much resistance for my liking... I replaced the bad part of the wire with a new one and was all back to normal again. It worked fine for a drive, but then when i went back 3hrs later i go to start it, the battery only had 12.08-11.8v, just enough to get a half of a full crank out of it (it has been doing this all week). So i jumped it to get it home and the alternator only brought the battery up to 12.48v. About 4 miles down the car wants to die, service light comes on, voltage (idiot light) never appears ( but it will light koef... ), and its hard to kept an idle. i got it in my drive way and put it in park and it idles steady for the most part and was holding steady at 12.48-12.30ish again... i know very little about gm cars ive always had fords, really do like my regal tho when it feels like running properly 😱 . can anyone help me out here it my primary vehichle right now and cant be w/o it to much longer.... thank you in advance!

If your alt checks out with 13.5 - 14v at idle then look at the battery and get it load-tested. Just checking the voltage shows very little, you need to know how many amps ( cca to be exact ) it's putting out with a proper load tester.

so i tested each cell and load tested it. It did good on each test. Its rated at 700 cca and put out 722. i fully charged the battery and put it back in the car and the alternator was puttin out 14v. Drove it around for 45min-1hr, with it still running i put the volt meter on it and was putting out 12.3-12.4v with wipers on high and high beams on. i shut the car off and tested it and it went up to 12.53v. I went through the wiring diagrans again. i have a couple questions. On the molex conector red wire that is suppose to go to go through the starter relay then to the ignition switch is hooked directly to the positive battery post... is that ok? is it "sensing" a load? and i do not have a ground wire on the alternator its self is it grounded through the brackets? why would the car run fine with this setup before?

is the voltage light on the dash suppose to be dim when the car is running? it only lights up k.o.e.f. never does anything.
