I can't get to mine right now to take a picture, but check the water passages. The cast aluminum oxidizes and gets eaten away. When it gets bad enough, you can have oil and water leaks. I'd suggest inspecting the oil pump for wear and damage while you are in there. Easier to find and fix now that once it's in the car...

I don't mean to be a bummer. This is a great find, and if you don't have to comply with emissions, there is no (cheap) replacement for displacement. For your next CL assignment, if you don't have an overdrive transmission...get one. You have a 455 ci fuel pump...

I don't have to worry about emission where I live. I am in Pinal County so I am good there. I do have a 200r4 from a Monte SS that is in need of a rebuild. I will get that one beefed up a little in hopes it handles the torque of the engine. But that is further down the line when the honey do list around the house is done. Right now I am only selling and re-investing the money I can scramble up from spare parts laying around. Plus garage is starting to look a lot cleaner with stuff getting sold lol.

I picked up a copy of Rick Dove's Buick performance book. There is a lot you can/have to do to spin a 455 to high RPM. If you can keep it under 4500 RPM it will last longer than cheap fuel prices. Buick performance parts are not common and not cheap. That's why I have not built mine up so far.

I don't plan on revving to high RPM's. It is going to be mostly just a weekend cruiser with a little red light action from time to time. No racing just stomping on the gas a bit.

TA Performance is about 1-1/2 from me I know they are the kings of Buick performance but I agree with you lots of $$$... The only performance mod (if you consider it) on the engine is the Edelbrock Performance intake. Witch is probably worth more than what I paid for the engine.

I need to put monkey bars in my garage so I can get over and to all my bits and pieces. Alas, my wife and I have two jobs, three kids, and two needful in-laws. The few minutes I have left over means I tend to find stuff to 'install later'.

Oh yea, I have an intake from an old Buick 350 laying around from a block I was going to get rebuilt but decided to sell at the time.. Those things way a TON.

The king of torque; I love my Buick 455. TA Performance is the best aftermarket support we have left. Research v8buick.com for more tips on improving the performance of that monster.

if thats a 75 or 76, judging by the valve covers, you wont have to enlarge the oil passeges. those are great years for blocks. the downside is the heads for those years. low compression smog heads.

Based on the block casting number, 1241735, it is a post-'72 engine. Still a good starting point to build upon though.

Stock 455s can be spun to 5500 and be fine... as long as you have the oil flow to keep things in check. It is a big block after all. By nature they make all their power under 5 grand in stock trim. I do think some of the top tear buick guys are spinning their 455s to 7k and beyond. If it all checks out, dump that intake and get a spread bore intake a nice Buick 350/455 Qjet (few on ebay right now, I prefer to build them myself but to each their own), and toss on an HEI, or points eliminator kit and you're good to go. If you don't mind, can ya give us a ball park figure on what you paid for it?
