Hi all,

I'll be leaving for University of North Carolina at Charlotte for college in a few months. Now that I have the Cavalier, I'll be leaving the Cutlass at home for my dad to drive ocassionally while I'm away. I'm going to be changing all of the door seals, trunk seals and sunroof seals before I leave. I will be putting it under a cover though just for added protection. My question is what are some decent car covers you guys have experience with? I'd be looking for something to keep moisture out, but I'm not looking to spend a fortune.

There are good car covers out there but I've been disappointed at the absurd cost of a decent one these days. The last few car covers I bought tore easily when I was putting the bungie cord just from one end to the other w/o even a very sharp object cutting them. You are in a Southern state and don't need a 'car cover' anyway... there was just nearly 3.5 foot snowbanks outside my house recently. I'd say consider putting up a whole tent instead if you have $ to spend. Do you really think your family is going to put a car cover over your car every time they borrow it. Also, a good tent you can use to do painting in later, if you're going to do painting yourself. I have just been so disgusted w the quality of car covers I recently bought they were totally trash and $25-35 a piece. I could have just went to ACE and bought tarps that were higher quality for half this price.

A good throwaway tent is a must have if you have older family members and can't use your garage to paint in. I have one on standby in the garage right now for when that day hopefully comes. Compressor, check, two different ones haven't decided which to use yet depends whichever nozzle I see cheaper first. Probably going to get some help w paint from someone w more exp. and also test paint a mower project I have before doing anything w/ my car's paint.

LOL. I was just laughing having memories of when google earth platinum used to be more live and one of my good freinds used to be checking if his dad put the car in the garage or not and his dad would lie half the time and get roasted though. Hopefully you have a better relationship w your dad than that

I do want a small tent for waxing in the summer, but I wouldn't leave it up while I was gone in case it gets windy and stuff. And yes, I do trust them to put the cover back on it when it gets parked at the house. My dad is just as anal as I am with our vehicles. Anyone have any more input on covers?

I use a Coverking Stormproof. But Ill admit I never used it in any type of stormy weather.
My purchase was based on alot of research (and by research I mean google) and many positive reviews. Its one of the more expensive covers but I figured this was one thing I didnt want to be cheap about. It cost me close to 400.00.

I store a different car inside a garage during the winters so I have a cover made of Dustop -- great for keeping dust off and could be used outside in a pinch, but not recommended ... mine was in excess of $200 so I agree with anyone a cover can be pricey, but I'll echo williamattop's sentiment that if you've invested a good chunk in the car, why skimp on something designed to protect the car?

I bought mine from Covercraft (covercraft.com), their website has a pretty-good comparison of the different fabrics ... if anything, it'll help you zero-in on what features you want

If you have the space you could buy a portable garage and park it in there, I bought one from Harbor Freight probably going on 10 years for around $160 and was only going to use it for the winter but ended up mounting it just off my driveway for year round parking, it will fit my Lincoln or Taurus in there but a Gbody would probably need something wider with the bigger doors.
There are plenty of places that sell these if you search and they are comparable to a good car cover in price. They are typically fully enclosed by design, I just leave the entrance open on mine and use it more like a car port since I keep the Monte and Lincoln in the garage for winter.
