those braces in the op's picture are there for the purpose of making the hood to fold in case of a front end accident...

in the event of a front end collision the bars that extend from the firewall area to the front of the fenders in the op's picture will bow up in the center and cause the hood to fold. It's meant to prevent the hood from slicing through the windshield.

So i took a trip to the wrecking yard, and was able to find me a pair of MC braces. Now if i could only find me the brace under the core suport.

Check Gp's for that brace, thats what I got mine from. If I'm not mistaken that brace was on all GPs. I think...

3XBrowncutty, some ,not all as far as I know. My first GP was a low option car, radio delete and all. It did not have the bar.

pontiacgp, still having a hard time with your explanation.

In a front end collision, the hinge is driven back until the "shoe" seats in the stud in the cowl. At that point, the built in "fold" point in the hood gives, the hood buckles up.

GM started doing this in the early 60s I believe.

I had some first hand experience of it on my 79 GP.

Also why would no other gbody need them?

Where did you hear that? Maybe I will learn something.

All 3 of my 83 GPs have the bar between the front frame rails and the X-bars on the radiator support. They also have the bracing behind the rear seat. Does anyone know why GPs got some of this stuff while other Gs didn't? 2 of my cars are solid roof cars, 1 is a t-top car. Two of them are original 305V8 cars, while the t-top car is a V6 car. None of them have the jounce bars shown in the picture above. What cars got the jounce bars besides MCSS?

Has anybody ever done the research to see which factories the cars with the added bracing came from?

I wouldnt be surprised if certin factories just automaticly put the bracing on most cars.
Maybe something to do with what region the car was built for. (out west, up north, etc.)

I read somewhere that most GPs were built in Canada. Is this true? Maybe location could have something to do with it.
