Hey guys im still in the process of rebuilding my 83 hurst olds 307(its been like 3 months thanks to every hold-up imaginable). Put a new timing chain on it (cloyes double roller) and its very loose feeling. Talked to my machine guy who did the crank and rods, said that its common on olds and pontiac motors for the chain to be loose. Maybe im just used to chevys and fords but does that sound right? I bought it through him (got a package deal on the machine work and parts) and hes a very reputable guy in my area but is he BS'in me or is it true? i dont want to plop another 45 bucks on a mail order chain to have the same results. I even tried ordering a stock chain but they only sell the chain (which i cant use because my old cam gear was a nylon tooth gear and the teeth broke(which is what destroyed the engine). My machine guy also said it could be because of slop in my cam :wtf: Any ideas?

broken timing chain or gears won't destroy the engine since it's a non interference engine

If the pieces of the gears get thrown around inside the engine they sure can destroy it.

yeah the oil pump was full of the nylon pieces, and the car had two spun rod bearings, figured it was related to the chunks in the motor and the clogged oil pump. i know its not an interference motor.

if you say so but I don't know how any of the pieces got through the screen on the pick up tube and the instant the gear broke the oil pump stops rotating and the engine shuts down so it's surprising bearings spun that quickly

i got the car with the spun bearings, who knows how long it was like that and how long it was driven like that. i wont ever know what exactly happened so its all theory haha. i just know the gear pieces couldnt have helped

yeah I dunno about that .... I didn't think I was EVER getting my double roller on. It was TIGHT! and yet a factory setup damn near fell into place. IDK, mine was all fresh ... new cam, cam bearings, ground crank, correct crank bearings

But the nylon teeth can cover the oil pickup and starve the engine for oil. However its not going to do that instaneously.

Now my brother's 403 had a camshaft and timing chain/gear snap on him and 4 of the valves did kiss the pistons bending the valves and knicking the pistons.

Just for the record i'm not an idiot and this isnt my first motor rebuild, i know the chain thing sounded dumb but i figured i would ask. . . u learn something new everyday haha. I'll order a new chain and let everyone know how i make out.

PS i should have listened to myself and put a 350 or 403 in it, all this agg for a 307. granted i know its a collector car and keeping the original motor is nice, but the time and money ive put into rebuilding this 180 horse dream motor :? makes me wonder haha.
basically everything broke on this motor, from air tubes to manifold bolts and ive spent hours torching and tapping, trying to find oddball control valves and sensors, ive had to get two different cranks for this thing, distributor seized in the block, ive lost alot of hair on this haha, never had so many problems doing a motor rebuild. And i own a shop for a living haha
