no one said or implied you were an idiot. You asked and I replied my experience. I had one chain (O.E.M. style replacement from Napa) that seemed to fall into place and a devil of a time putting the double roller on. Hoping ofcourse that a different chain does you well and let us know obviously, but if it's a new set .... I'd be really curious as to "why?" it would feel loose. Neither of the chains I tried was "loose" just one almost slipped right in place and the other I struggled with.

haha the idiot comment wasnt hostile, i just have a cynical sense of humor and low self esteem hahah

misunderstanding then .... I get accused of being an ******* - sometimes when I am NOT even being an *******. Problem with forums there is no tone when you type your words out ... sometimes things come off as harsher or drier than meant, yanno.

i understand completely haha. I cant remember how many times ive fought with females or girlfriends over text messages that were taken the wrong way hahaha. Works the same on forums. . . but anywho i ordered a new chain, if its loose then im going to push the 307 to the curb for trash day and get a 350 haha

Getting this thread back on topic...

I recently replaced the timing chain and gears in one of my 307s. In my case it was a stock replacement chain, though with an all metal cam gear. I was also surprised that the chain appeared to be loose. I've put timing chains into a number of Olds motors, so I don't agree with your machinist, but this is the first time I've done a 307. There SHOULD be no difference, however. I also know that the gears and chain that I took out were original, so I'm nearly 100% sure this motor has not been align bored, which could cause slack in the chain.

i put a timing chain and gears on my 260 and it was loose 2 but not bad 7 mo later it still ok the 350 or 403 would be so much better but its your car and the 307 will be gr8 good luck

My thought was an align bored block too....... I wonder what the story is on the seemingly loose chain.

excuse the question .... if it was align bored wouldn't the cam be in the right place and under-sized bearings installed. I'd think maybe the bearings need replaced and could cause a slight wobble? I honestly don't know much about machining. I just listenned to my machinist and wrote him a check, when we prepped my block.

loose is a relative term to begin with......without the deflection being measured it's unknown if the chain is in or out of specs

Still no chain today so no new news. But the block has never been touched, im the first person to crack it open in all its glory. The cam bearings look fine and the cam looks fine, no scores or slop in that department. I know i cant say without a proper measurement, but this thing is really loose, i can push it on the sides about 1/2 inch, ive taken all sorts of motors apart and this thing feels like a 200k mile chain haha. Oh well, ill update when the new chain arrives.
