Black Rockers. This is the way GM did it, on Cutlasses with the big lower trims. The bottom one inch of the doors also needs to be done in black and masked off too as a small portion is seen below the trim when it is installed. This too is how GM did things. It isn't noticeable on a dark car, but a light color would look bad with it body color.

I may add more pics to this later, but these give you the general idea. I have a whole photo montage of the base coat spraying and how long it took to get hiding with the very light mist coats I needed to avoid the reaction.

I've been following your thread since coming to G-Body. Congrats man for a great job and also seeing the end is not too far away from completion.

Awesome paint job man, I love that midnight blue on there. Can't wait too see it all together

hey man, I noticed you are in Tampa. I live in Savannah, but I am originally from there and my folks are still there. Would you be willing to paint my 85' cutlass at some point? I haven't found any places up here that I would trust to do it and I would like to get it done before I deploy. Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Bud

If you saw the car in person, you wouldn't want me to do it! Way too many runs, and too much orange peel. I will be wet sanding for weeks before I can buff it. Plus, if I were to do it for someone else, I would have to charge more than a G body is normally worth to make it worth my while. I easily have $1500 in materials alone to do this car' paint and body, and that does not include the price of weatherstripping, etc. Seriously though, this car is probably the last one I will do for a long time. I don't have the time or space to do another one as I need to concentrate more on school now so I can get out of pizza delivery. I am just trying to tie up the loose ends in my life that tend to make it chaotic.

Well, I started wet sanding the runs out of the clear today. I like to do this within a day of painting so that the shrinkage occurs at a similar rate between the run area and non run area.

Shortened paint mixing stick (2-3 inches) wrapped in 1,000 grit paper to remove runs. You can see the orange peel in the quarter in this pic because it looks cloudy.

One of the bigger runs. Picture taken while I was still working on it to show what it looked like as they don't show up on my camera normally.

Hood, fenders and header panel temporarily installed so I can wet sand and buff them. They will come back off later so I can paint the sheet metal under the hood in satin black, like GM did when it was new. That will also let me install the bolts in the door jamb for the fenders without scratching the door.

The front end has much less orange peel on it. I figured out that this is because when I sprayed them in September, it was warm out (about 70 degrees). When I did the shell, it was about 55 degrees. The clear will not flow out properly when it is that cold. Had the temperature been right, the car would have come out much better. It will still look good when I am done, but I have a lot more work with the wet sanding than I would have if I had sprayed it at the right temperature.

OMG that is a great color. What is it?

GM "Navy Blue Metallic". It's a Corvette color from the early 2000's. I believe it's a polychrome.
