butt hurt over my 305

I appriciate all of the posts so far. I didn't want to know what motor is better. My personal choice is ANY bigblock for cool factor of coarse. I am not a racer( other than stop light to stop light).
I did not know that bore was the determining factor on what most would consider a platform to build on.
I also am not trying to build a hot motor for my malibu either, I wanted to know if I changed the cam would it yeild more performance out of the 305 or would it just sound a little better and not perform as well. I'm not wanting to build it into somthing it's not, even if the bore and stroke were that of the ford's 302 or the chevy 302, it's still a 305. I was not going to put my opinion out there but me personaly dont care for any small block. My 302 ford was no slowch but even after dumping 800 into it my veiw never changed, I knew from day one to use my money torwards a big block but I didn't and because of that I decided to sell it.Its not big enough, but that's not what I was asking. Please don't think that my love for big blocks is in any way disrespecting any of the millions of small blocks. My malibu is not going to be a daily driver when done but I need to have a reliable runner to gather parts while I plan out my car.
Thank you, I will not cheep out on a distributor, Are there any other parts that I can buy that will switch over to the big block? I don't mind spending any amount of money if it helps me get where I want my car to go eventually.

Well,if it ran pretty well I would stick with your original plan of:
"I am not planning on a rebuild but just a simple carb, intake, distributor, new valve covers and a air cleaner."

I would probably leave the cam alone it won't make a big difference without better/fresh heads, save your money for the big block your going to need it.
I would however put a new timing chain set in for reliabilty and install new oil pan/timing cover gaskets while you are there.
I would stick with your "bolt on parts" plan and throw some cheap headers on will help it gain some power also.
I would also buy a nice distributor it will be the only thing that tranfers over to your big block.

That statement shows more common sense than the vast majority of people who post threads like this. You are to be commended.

Not really. Yes' the carb will physically interchange but will likely either be way to big for the 305 or too small for the BBC.
You're on the right track. In case you haven't seen them here's a couple motivators.

I used an S.p.2.p edelbrock intake on my 305, it give you better low end torque. It looses in the higher rpm but being a daily driver it worked for me..you can pick them up for under $50

It runs ok but my carb is leaking from both sides when under load. I have a non computer quad that was left over from a buddy's build. Plus the check engine light comes on after start up..Yes I have checked and its still there.
It idles fine and runs good but I dont want to have a fire...That would be bad.
Headers are not an option only because my car has brand new single 2 1/2 with a flowmaster. That money could be spent elsewear plus I got a good deal on it so I can give the motor away to a young person that's strapped when I pull it.
My new car is not a daily driver. I bought it for going to car shows/swap meets around.
I already had most of the parts in the garage but a distributor and thought a cam may help but the more i think about it the more off my plan I get. I do have a new double roller timing chain around here.
I guess I'll just bolt on a few more pony's.. Rid the computer stuff and start my plan.

I did an upgrade on a 305 and it included oil pump, timing chain, rv cam and lifters, z28 springs, valve stem seals, edelbrock intake, rebuilt quadrajet, and one of those cheap distributors and it runs great

of course I did all the gaskets because it was leaking oil all over the place. it runs really good and the idle sounds tougher than it did stock. I have not done any real crusing because I just painted the car and it is in pieces but just moving it around it seams to have more power and I would bet that this 305 will last another 100k if driven right

I took the emissions crap off it and plugged the air injection tubes so i did not spend any money on the exhaust as well.

it really bothers me when one of these debates comes around about 305's. sure they are junk compared to a 350 and sure I would not rebuild one but our cars came with them and they are good for cruizin around without having to swap motors. to each their own.

this post by speedbob was not asking for all the debate. he wanted to know if he should put a cam in his 305 and I say yes but dont spend all kinds of money. you can get a rv cam cheap and you will have more hp and torque

^^ oh my.. the only reason why I was going to change it up a bit was to fix all my leaks also. here is a pic of it. I take pride in not having oil on my driveway. Plus i already have most of it so a little freshing is just replacing the parts that do leak and don't work(carb). I sold my 300m to help fund my malibu. I plan on starting my parts collecting this winter for the conversion but that may take awile to get everything so from now to then I need the malibu to go to swap meets and junkyard shoppin so a decent runner is all it needs to be.
I can get a new performer cam and lifter set for 100 bucks right now, just wondering if it would be worth it or will i just be throwing that cash away?
I was also wondering if I swap the carb(new one, non computer controlled) and left the dizz(computer controlled) would It run? The old carb leaks bad and I am afraid to run it in fear of a fire.

I would put the cam in there

what are the specs on the cam you can over do it with the 305 it does not have the heads to flow a big cam
