i wouldnt say anyone is attacking him but rather his choice of engine to modify. it doesnt seem like the guy is all that concerned with performance since he asked for a cam just to make the engine sound badass which reminds me of the import guys who put coffee can tail pipes on their cars thinking it makes their car badass when they arent. it's called window dressing and i dont subscribe to such tomfoolery.
as far as i'm concerned all it does is bring unnecessary attention to your car which will in turn make you regret having a car that sounds mean but really isnt. i prefer to fly under the radar so i dont get noticed by johnny law or honda hank who wants to challenge you in his likewise noisy but lackluster in performance car. but hey thats just me, i dont like getting bothered about my car or because of my car.
my friend bought an 80 firebird late last year which IMO is a total turd given the engine is way overcammed, the rear gear doesnt match the cam profile by a country mile and has race mufflers on it. sounds really mean but it takes off slowly and to get into the power curve he has to run the engine at a higher than acceptable for a street car RPM band. he uses so much gas it's unbelievable. the car looks good inside and out but it just doesnt run as well as it should.
the way i see it you can set your car up correctly for whatever the application may be, street, race, whatever, or just throw your money into a fire and watch it burn because that's what you're doing if you're not going to ensure all the parts you're using match for the specific application you have in mind. buyers remorse is a term that comes to mind in such situations. it's why i wont buy someone's "project". they figured out they were doing it all wrong at some point and now feel discouraged about starting over so they sell it to the next dope who later regrets buying the car. my car was a virgin when i bought it, it was 100% all original, nothing missing and nothing hacked up and cobbled together. so rather than saying something negative i tend to ignore these types of threads. some of these people are correct in what they're telling him, they're trying to help him avoid a major pitfall in cam selection which can make or break the performance of the engine and ultimately the car in general. sometimes there's not a very nice way to say "you're doing it wrong" because no matter how you phrase it what you're saying boils down to telling them they're doing it wrong. i'm not sure that really constitutes an "attack" as you put it.
