Just got a 1985 Cutlass Supreme T-Top; it''s very clean and sweet but has been setting up for years. Replaced electronic carb and it's running but, very hard to start, spits, sputters after many times, it will start and settle down, then runs great. Periodically, it will go dead at red light and takes forever to start back. Check engine light is on and throws code for throttle position sensor, which is built into electronic carb, I think. Also, oil/choke light tries to blink a little. Thinking about putting a Holley on there, what's involved with doing away with electronic carb?

Swap the carb and put a normal HEI distributor in it and I believe you are good to go

Oh and you will need a Q-jet to Holley carb adapter plate

If I was going to eliminate the computer controlled carb and distributor on a stock application I would probably look for an older Quadrajet that is close to your application, that way you can possibly use your fuel line, linkage etc and then put in a non computer controlled HEI

Easiest thing to do, is get a non computer qjet for your engine. If you have an olds 307, one from an olds 350 will work. If it's a 305, those are everywhere. Also a non computer hei as Turna said. But if you really want a holley, get that adapter plate and the hardware. You'll need the dizzy either way if you don't already.

As you can tell there are a lot of people here sympathetic to the Q-Jet's.

Why? I have no idea.......

I use to be one of them many many moons ago.

Then i realized I was wrong many moons ago.

Unless the guy rebuilding them has been rebuilding them every day for the last 40+ years most have no idea what they are doing.

And to spend 300 plus on a rebuilt Q-jet...well to me that's just silly.

Had a teacher toooo many years ago that said the carb is the last place you want to look. It's been sitting for years check(better yet replace) the cap, rotor, wires, plugs. Look for vacuum leaks and make sure that's the only code being thrown. Check timing using proper procedure. Had the same problem w/ my Monte (sat for 20 years) had a good looking set of split fire plugs that turned out to be my problem.
