It controls how quickly the secondaries open. It's vacuum controlled, and should be all the way in with the engine running and idling, all the way out when the engine is off. When you floor it, the lack of vacuum releases it, usually takes 2-3 seconds to go all the way out.

So went back to down to check it now that the storm has passed and I was right it does not go anywhere even with the car hot and idling. Does this mean my secondaries are not opening up?

Hi

The indicated part on your carb is the choke pull off, which dampens the opening of the secondary air valve as well as cracking open the choke when the engine first starts. I'm guessing this car doesn't start well when cold.

Once the engine is warmed up the choke pull off won't affect the running of the engine except under hard acceleration. If the car dies while driving there is a good chance that the choke is closing. In your picture I can see that you have an original choke thermostat - the new ones have a slightly different connector. Chances are that the electric choke isn't working causing the choke to stay closed or to only open a bit when driving, which will stall the engine.

So, you've probably got 2 issues - a bad choke pull off and a bad choke, both of which should be fixed with a rebuilt carb.

You will want to make sure that there is power to the choke when the engine is running. The choke is wired through the oil pressure switch so a bad switch will cause the choke not to work.

Hope that helps!

Well actually the car starts right away in the morning one pump and starts right up with no problems. Im sure the choke works the car idles high until warm then idles normaly once I press the accelerator. Maybe your right and it is only opening a bit when driving.. Is there anything I can do to drive it until my rebuild carb gets here next week.

not trying to spend any more $$ on parts I just dropped 278 for a rebuilt carb with lifetime warranty. I just figured this one would get me around till then.

damn dust storms.

You can test the choke pull off - disconnect the vacuum hose from the front of it, push the plunger in, then cover the air hole that you just uncovered when you pulled off the hose. Let go of the plunger. It should stay in until you remove your finger.

You can disconnect the choke. The car will probably run crappy for a few minutes while it warms up, but then run fine; I've had mine off all summer.

Remove that screw right in the very top center of your picture and pop it loose. The screw is short so make sure you don't loose it. Try it and see if anything changes. If not, reconnect the choke.
