Chevy 400 Build

If you go aftermarket, you cam usually order the heads with steamholes, or have a machinist drilled them.

Have you ever road in a car with 600hp? Or 400hp? The rest of the car also means a whole lot. You still want AC? and 600hp and nitrous? Im not insulting at all. My advice, dont get caught up on a number.

I found some complete vortec heads that are stock and still have the springs and rocker arms still on. For 200 bucks. I know im limited to a .480 cam lift. With stock valves in these heads what kind of hp can I expect? I plan to get them ported

Is it true that I cannot run vortec heads on my build because of the Speed Pro h616Cp pistons? Machinist told me in order for me to able to run vortec heads I will have to run air plane or 100+ octane fuel? Whats the best stock head to use...to get some power and to be able to run pump gas??

I hope someone can confirm, but
I've heard you need to run 5cc dish pistons. With flattops, there is to much compression with Vortec 64cc heads

I wonder if you could get away with a flat-top piston combo if you use a very large duration cam, which will bring down the dynamic compression ratio.

I was looking at some of my old posts and this one came up as "most active topic" so I was wondering how this engine build turned out.
The OP is still on here and I for one am curious if it ever ran or did it blow up or did he give up?
My inquiring mind would like to know.

+2

Ended up selling the engine because i had to move no where to store it... Trying to find me 350 block now or rebuild this sbc 305 I have. I should of kept the sbc 40 but I ran into problems where my rod bolts have to be mocked up because of the cam hitting them
