My olds has been sitting since '04. I'm sure by now not only does it desperately need the gear oil changed it likely has a crust on everything. Short of taking everything apart what would be the best way to clean it out and still have the oil stick well enough to lube it?

I left my 3.42 7.62" sitting outside uncovered for 10 years and it was fine inside.. no moisture. Maybe drop fluid and clean out with parts cleaner.. dry and refill. Just look for rust on the bearings doesn't take much to put the surfaces.

Never had a rear lock up on me from sitting either.

Spin it over by had first to get the oil into the parts if you are worried about it.

Pop the cover off put a magnet in the oil to get any metal shavings out if there are any.

Top it off or refill it.

i wouldn't clean it with any type of cleaner. If the parts have a nice coating of oil on them good.

That's what kept it alive all those years

The oil in the rear end is isolated from contaminants so it remains with all of it's lubricating abilities for years unless it was severely overheated. I like to change it when ever I get a car cause I don't know the history behind the car. I like using synthetic because ti takes heat better and allows the differential to rotate easier

Whenever I do a diff oil change I drain it, hose it out with a can of brake cleaner, wipe it down, seal it up and fill it. You just want to hope that the bearings and seals didn't die from sitting.
