Re: CS130 Alternator Help

I did a alt swap when I installed Intrepid fans also but I went with the CS144. I couldnt get it to charge at first but I went to Radio Shack & bought a pack of resistors. I put one inline to the "L" terminal tried it again & it was working

Re: CS130 Alternator Help

What are the real benefits from this swap anyways, is it worth the hassles??

It was for me 8) But I didn't have any troubles. The CS130 charges with a higher amp rate at lower speeds then the CI type.It works better when in overdrive with lower RPMs and higher electrical loads like cooling fans, AC, ECT.

Like he said my factory alternator could not keep up with the lights and radio especially when the fans kicked one! The lights dimmed out and the radio would shut off  So after doing the swap it made a world of a difference didn't even faze it when the fans kicked on and that's with everything on. Best of all i did my swap for under 50 bucks...

^^^^What he said! I was having those exact problems until I switched over.

Re: CS130 Alternator Help

Aside from needing the wiring adapter for an SI to CS alternator. Is there any mods needed to be done to the mounting brackets?

Re: CS130 Alternator Help

I bought an aftermarket kit that has the lower bracket and uses a nice turnbuckle. The stock bracket is supposed to work fine.

i used a turnbuckle from Lowes... Dont laugh lol

Re: CS130 Alternator Help

I was gonna do that too and I bought one, but I just couldn't stand the thought of doing it. Everything was polished and new and it didn't look right to me. Kinda like if I hung those rubber balls from the back of my roadrunner. :puke:

Well guys I figured out the problem.

Tried a number of things, including buying the adapter pigtail with the resistors built in to resolve the issue. That didn't work and still would not charge the system. So I went cruising through google researching people having similar issues on the hot rodding websites. Found one website where it showed that the point of the second wire (not the red one that goes to the post) was to tell the internal regulator when to turn on or when the car is running. For whatever reason, my brown wire that goes to the idiot light is no longer working. That "GEN" light worked before the car went down, but I did go through the harness and may have snipped it by accident.

So with the pigtail adapter, all you have to do is run the second wire to an ignition power source. That way when you turn the key, the regulator kicks on.
