Cut the cable and streaming services opinions

For me I have Prime Video with my Amazon Prime and I do the Sportsnet Now subscription during hockey season as soon as playoffs are over I cancel and wait for the next season. I haven't had a cable subscription for about 8 years now. All I ever used to watch on was the cooking network and hockey anyhow. My 55 inch TV is hooked up as my second computer monitor. It gives me the abillity to stream anything I want usually add free.

Chromecast works OK most of the time but is glitchy and limited from a quality standpoint. It also does not work with Apple iphones, tablets or laptops. Our household uses iPhones so I bought an Apple 4K media streamer and could not be happier. I am a home theater guy so quality is key for me. It passes through all the surround Formats from streaming services and is 4K. Right now I think the Apple box is King of the Hill… I haven’t seen anything better.

You are incorrect. It works perfectly on the girlfriends IPhone. I can cast to her house from my house if I want to, and vice versa. I also disagree on the quality and "glitches", mine works perfect in 4k.

Apple TV is ok, not much different than Prime or Netflix.

I think you’re confused. I’m not talking about the service that you subscribe to called Apple TV. I’m strictly talking about the streamer boxes (hardware). The Apple box is by far the premium product available now. Check the reviews. I was so disappointed with Chromecast because it really is not a media hub and didn’t support IOS or pass through surround formats.

Chromecast is a gateway for the apps in your phone to stream to your TV. It works absolutely flawlessly with an apple device. It also can cast your phone browser to your TV and stream music. Instead of a remote it uses your phone, otherwise functionality is the same, it plays stuff on your TV. AppleTV is just an apple cable box, so you get whatever apple deems you worthy of watching. If you have an account to a streaming service and the app on your phone or tablet you can watch it on your TV. I can also pause and move my show to whatever else I have a $40 Chromecast connected to, including the google speaker in my garage.

I can steam music and pornhub simultaneously, imagine the possibilities, but you probably can't because you have a glorified cable box. 🤣🤣🤣

Wrong on so many levels. You can’t add apps to your Chromecast. The Apple TV box is a media streamer and you add apps to it depending on what service you would like to use. Did you even read the comparison? I gave my POS Chromecast away. Apparently the newer models have improved so I’ll give them that.

Yeah, there is a bit of a difference. Apple TVs typically have the apps natively on the box. Chromecast traditionally relied on the app in the your phone/laptop/tablet/etc. Your device basically just told the Chromecast to play a particular stream. The multitude of Android based STBs are a bit closer to how an Apple TV works. And those have their own set of issues too.

I can't say I've had many issues with Chromecast over the years. Yeah, there probably are some issues around audio stream qualities etc. It does work with Apple products. You do need to install the Google Home App on your device first though. Then the Chromecast ion will appear in the supported apps. Unlike Android devices where the support is native to the OS.

If one is invested in the Apple ecosystem at all, I'd agree, the Apply TV makes a lot more sense than using a Chromecast/Fire Stick/Roku/etc.

We have different options up here in Canada but see what matches the shows you like watching. Honestly Netflix has become the most expensive and only has a few shows I am interested in. Disney+ has a lot for the money, Mandalorian and Bobba Fett were very good. We also get Hulu shows because we can't get that up here, a steal for $10 a month. I can hardly wait for the new season of the Orville. We also have Crave up here, basically HBO Max and Paramount Plus, watching Star Trek Picard season 2 right now. All 3 are less than $50, half what we paid for cable. As Mike said, our cell phone plans are ridiculous up here, I am for 5 of them right now😳. We use Chromecast all the time, they work pretty well for us. We have 6 in our house, multiple running at once on our Wifi.

Read what I'm writing. I've had both and still have 2 Chromecast 4k. The Apple box is like a cable box, as in everything is inside it and yes you can add apps, connect to internet and it acts like a cable box, it doesn't need outside support from an app.

The Chromecast will accept streams from any connected device/app and put them on your TV. If you have a guest over and they have a streaming service on their device you can have them stream on your TV. You can stream games and web pages that support Chromecast, FROM YOUR CONNECTED DEVICE. The Chromecast is a gateway to stream from any connected app or device. Apple, windows or Android, if you download the Google home app they will connect to the chromecast.

I can edit videos from my laptop on my TV through my Chromecast. It's a device that's connected through my Chromecast. It's neither Apple or Android.

Like I said, Chromecast has probably improved the feature set and quality of their unit. I’m glad you’re happy with yours. Mine was at least two years old and was definitely not compatible with Apple products. It was glitchy with a slow processor and overall was a letdown. The only way to cast a video to the television was using a Google browser. 🙄

Haven't had cable tv in 14years or antenna TV. But we have Netflix and Hulu and at&t for Internet.
We don't watch much TV and it's not about the money or crappy shows we are always doing something and don't have time. When we do have time we got Netflix and Hulu and tons of VHS and DVDs. Maybe one day when I get old and can't work on cars and tinker with stuff then I'll get cable.
You won't miss it unless TV is your life.
