1-2 hours? HA! Took me at least six hours; this job was a b#$%. Had to figure out how to get the hard-to-reach nuts and bolts off, pull all the belts, coax off the old water pump, scrape off all the old gasket materials, and then put it all back together. The hoses were all stuck to the fittings and I had to split them with a knife to peel them off. I'm wondering if they've ever been changed; there's a light layer of sediment coating the inside of all the hoses.

yah, that's about right. the fact that it took you six hours is more that you were figuring things out as you went. nothing wrong with that. especially with cars as old as ours, your going to run into problems replacing even normal wear items. shoot, i just replaced my wheel cyl's and while bleeding, i blew a line (inside the frame rail, under the drivers door hinge, of all places!)

Well that's not so bad. Try changing an Olds water pump in your driveway when it's -30 °C lol.
